May 22, 2017 - Disembarking in Copenhagen

It's bittersweet as our cruising has come to a close. We've had some incredible experiences, and will miss the wonder of new places to be visited. But, on the other hand, it's time to go home. First, though, we'll spend a couple of days exploring Copenhagen. The weather is so much better this time in Copenhagen - low 60's and partly sunny. We took a canal cruise that meandered throughout Copenhagen, but we could also see our cruise ship anchored at the port. Copenhagen reminds us a bit of Amsterdam, with the bike riders, the boats on the...

Where is Shirley?

Dec 7, 2016 - LAST DAY!

Finally. It is D-day. I mean, it's literally D-day, but it is also departure day. It is time to depart this crazy long super fun adventure we have been having and head for home. I am so excited. I miss my bed. I miss my cats. I miss California weather and being able to feel my face. I miss my family. I miss my coworkers. Hell, I miss work. And I miss my kids! All of them. From all of my teams. My boys especially, as they have been having a fantastic volleyball season and I've missed so much of it. I will be tired, but glad to go see their...

European Adventure

Aug 31, 2016 - Denmark

A comfortable five hour train ride later, we arrived in Copenhagen Central Station, going across the 8 km Øresund bridge from Malmø, Sweden to an artificial island in the middle of the strait, then the crossing completed to Denmark by a 4 km tunnel. We didn't have to produce any documentation on the train ride from Stockholm to Copenhagen, although we noticed signs in the Copenhagen train station saying that all passengers to Sweden would have to produce passports or other documents. We had twelve days packed with seeing Danish relatives,...

Aug 28, 2016 - a sea day in port

The Serenity of the Seas returned to Copenhagen as silently as she left. Usually on a disembarkation day there is lots of banging and crashing as people lug their suitcases into the hall and the porters whisk them away. Maybe our cabin is in an extra quiet spot, but minimal sleep interruptions are much appreciated. Our waiter told us that the wifi in the terminal is very strong, especially before the crew can get off and the next batch of passengers arrive. We took his advice and joined the folks leaving the ship rather than waiting in the...

Aug 20, 2016 - board the Serenade

It's a good thing we have visited Copenhagen not too long ago and seen most of the sights of interest. And we will be here again in eight days. Between the jet lag and long Iceland touring days, we needed a break. Our microscopic hotel room had excellent wifi, so after negotiating with each other every time one of us wanted to move around, we caught up on email and news of the world. There were many restaurants within walking distance, but Denmark is expensive and we ended up eating Chinese. It seems like you should eat the food of the...

Aug 19, 2016 - fly to Copenhagen

Considering the fact that our Reykjavik hotel was located on a residential looking street, we were amazed that it seemed noisier than the one we stayed at in Manhattan. With all the street noise it was well after midnight before we fell asleep. That 4:30am alarm came all too soon and we stumbled around the room, hoping that we had noticed all the possessions that needed to be put back in the suitcase. In the Scandinavian way our shuttle driver came fifteen minutes early, but we were ready. We were surprised that the airport was a madhouse...

Aug 12, 2016 - Copenhagen

This morning we sailed into Copenhagen and departed the ship along with 1798 other tourists. Our local tour guide was waiting for us and took us on a tour of the city starting with the Little Mermaid statue of Hans Christian Anderson fame. Next was Amalienborg, the home of the Royal Danish Family and then we had a tour of the Christiansborg Palace, the seat of the Danish Parliament, the Prime Minister's office, the Supreme Court, and is used by the Royal family for entertaining. The nickname of the building is Borgen, for those of us who...

Aug 8, 2016 - Copenhagen Denmark - July 1, 2016

It was a short cruise from Aalborg and we docked at Copenhagen, Denmark around 8:30. Like our previous stop our departure time was scheduled for 9:00 PM which gave us plenty of time to explore on our own. We got on one of the shuttle busses which dropped us off at a central location downtown. We had read in a guide book that a “MUST” see place (2nd most visited in Copenhagen) was the hippie neighborhood of Christianshavn. I asked the tour director to give us directions. His first words to me were (very seriously) “why, do you want to buy...

Cruise of the Baltic

Jul 31, 2016 - Day 2; 7/31; Amsterdam to Copenhagen & on

We left Amsterdam, at 7:55 am, and arrived in Copenhagen at about 9:10 am. From there, we left the airport to take the shuttle bus to the ship. After checking in, we boarded the ship and went to our room. It is a handicapped, balcony room, so it is bigger than most other rooms. Very nice! The ship undocked about 5 pm to sail to Warnemunde Germany, where we will spend most of tomorrow.

Jun 11, 2016 - Exploring Copenhagen

After a typical European breakfast in the hotel we set off for Nyhavn (New Habour) by taxi just after 10.00am. On arrival at Nyhavn we were able to buy tickets for the canal cruise and then board the vessel that was about to depart. Since it was only half full we were able to get good seats near the stern. The cruise took an hour as we made our way out of Nyhavn into the main canal and then wove our way through urban canals. The sky was clear and the sun was out, but the breeze was still cool (exacerbated by the speed of the boat). We...
