Mar 25, 2011 - The final chapter

Friday, 3/25 We planned to get up at 6:00am or so and make the drive to Atlanta. We were thinking we had about 8 hours. However, when I awoke at 5:00 am, I heard George throwing up in the bathroom. Not a good start to the day! He continued for another hour. We also had to stop numerous times on the way home. Once, I pulled over on the side of the interstate and felt like we were in a dangerous situation with all the trucks flying by. I felt great until…………all of a sudden, it hit! I once again, flew to the side of the interstate, slammed on...

Mar 24, 2011 - !Welcome to the US of A!

Thursday, 3/24 It is great having a mid-day flight. We had another great breakfast at the hotel. Shelly and Rey saw that there was a fire in the Miami airport. At first, our flight was cancelled (wish it had been), but then it was listed as ‘on time’ so off we went to the airport. We said our good-byes. Shelly and Rey headed back to Zancudo and our travel horrors began. The check in line didn’t move. We stood there for 3 hours. Finally, we were told that the flight would go to Miami but we couldn’t get out of there. We asked to remain in...

Mar 23, 2011 - Irazu

Wednesday, 3/23 The breakfast buffet here is amazing and it is beautifully displayed. After stuffing ourselves, we decided to tour Volcan Irazu. We weren’t sure our little 4 cylinder was going to make it to the top. We think we were more than 10,000 ft. up and it was actually quite chilly. Breathing was more difficult, too. After months of heat, it was quite a change. Irazu is inactive now but ‘alive’. Sulpher smoke and fumes are always present. We could look down into the crater and it was quite beautiful. We were fortunate to come out of...

Mar 22, 2011 - San Jose bound!

Tuesday, 3/22 We were up before 5:00am to catch the 7:30am ferry. We took a very short walk on the beach, brought in the furniture, cleaned again, took fruit and veggies to Enid’s place, met Shelly and Rey and hiked to the taxi boat. Boy, was it crowded! We waited and waited and Lizeth came walking up! It was great to talk to her on the ride over. Derek was there, too with his box of clothes. He latched on to me for the ride over. He was fighting hard to hold back tears as was his grandmother and Michell. We rented the same little car....

Mar 21, 2011 - Bittersweet!

Monday, 3/21 It is a bittersweet day of good-byes until later. We spent the morning organizing, cleaning, and packing. We washed all of the rugs and hung on the line. We walked on the beach and Cinnamon is having a hard time. She is off the steroids and is limping a lot….…guess she knows she is leaving today and wants to send us on a guilt trip. Michell and Derek (didn’t know he was coming) stopped by at 11:00. I took them to Oceano for ice cream. Michell helped us in the library yesterday. She said that Derek was very sad because he was...

Mar 20, 2011 - Our special Celebration!

Sunday, 3/20 We enjoyed the music from the local church this morning. We spent lots of time in the yard raking, watering, and planting, too! Our orchid is hanging in there. Library attendance was low but it was a confusing day. Sweet Angie came without her big sister. She obviously collected books from everyone along the way. Neither she nor we had any ideas about which books belonged to which students. We’ll figure it out LATER. Ellen offered to drop the library box off at Oceano but she needed a bungee. She came to our house and LOVED our...

Mar 19, 2011 - Uneventful!

Saturday, 3/19 We slept in! No early morning visitors this time! After our walk on the beach, we had breakfast at the school soda but Enid was in San Jose with inner ear problems. We want to talk to her about allowing her son to attend our camp. Karen called to say she’d be by Monday to pick up Cinnamon! Can’t believe our time here is almost done. Laundry day!!! All of the library helpers really want name badges so I spent the afternoon making badges for all of the kids that have visited the library. Maybe that will help the new volunteers...

Mar 18, 2011 - A trip to the Border

Friday, 3/18 The local bus leaves at 5:30 in front of the school. We met Shelly and Rey and boarded the almost-empty bus. We picked up lots of people along the way including all of the high school students. We arrived in Conte at about 6:45. Sylvia and Gary were there waiting for us. We traveled by car all the way to Paso Canoas. George took the VERY BACK. What a bumpy ride! There, we had a delicious Tico breakfast at Soda Negro something or the other. We searched for a variety of things, bought the lomito for Elena’s beef stroganoff, but...

Mar 17, 2011 - Dinner with Alberto

Thursday, 3/17 We had a great walk on the beach. Poor Cinnamon hobbled along with us the whole way. We feel like we’ve got to get her more independent before we leave. The swelling is gone but she just hardly uses that one leg. She is really dependent on us and we leave in less than a week! Emma will be fine. Joel’s work is looking great! Still, the shipment of roof paint hasn’t arrived yet. George says it has to be silicone! Sylvia and Gary came by, used the internet and then visited us at the library. It was a VERY busy day! Gabby does a...

Mar 16, 2011 - Visitors from afar!

Wednesday, 3/16 Joel and his friend were at our house before 6:30am. The sanding started early. Good thing we went to bed early last night! We certainly hope the new polyurethane will protect the part of the porch that gets wet. We enjoyed the beach for a while and then returned to the house to organize books a bit more for the library. We decided to go ahead and card some of the English books for the kids! Sylvia and Gary surprised us just after noon today. They did arrive in the rainstorm yesterday but finally found their house. Although...

Mar 15, 2011 - The Amazing Playa Cacao

Tuesday, 3/15 Alex met us at the dock and shuttled Rey, Shelly, George and I to Playa Cacao. It is a little place just our side of Golfito. There we met an awesome lady named Sharon She has the most beautiful and interesting home there. She is from Canada but has lived in our area for 30 years. What a great story she has! In her early years, she was quite a partier but her job was to guide ships in and out of the harbor. After sinking one, she decided she couldn’t go home so settled in Golfito back when the banana plantations were still...
