Feb 4, 2014 - Day 8

After our usual routine for the morning, we had opportunity to watch the biologists perform multiple excavations of old nests at the hatchery. The hatchery is a place to relocate nests that previously were in danger of not surviving. This could be due to tourist traffic patterns on a beach or if a turtle laid her eggs in an area that wasn't high enough on the beach, thus allowing the next high tide to wash them all away. This area is corralled off with fence and chicken wire which only slows down the raccoons, but certainly doesn't keep...

Feb 3, 2014 - Day 7

Another beautiful day on the pacific coast of Costa Rica! The plan for the afternoon is a walk through the salt marsh to observe the local plants, animals and birds. It was great to get out into the local vegetation during daylight hours, to experience all that we had head about but haven't had a chance to witness due to working at night. We all had a great time seeing unusual species of wildlife that are foreign to us in the states. Humming birds were plentiful along with other native colorful birds. After several hours of observing the...

Feb 2, 2014 - Day 6

After breakfast, we had the opportunity to take advantage to what was billed as horseback riding but soon discovered it was much more than that. We traveled to a local Costa Rican farm that is typical in this area and got to experience all the daily activates that occur on a farm but compressed into several hours for our visit. We were welcomed by the entire family which seemed to included several generations. We immediately were taken into the large pig pen and got to see all the new piglets that Dale immediately gravitated to. We...

Feb 1, 2014 - one more wekend

Well I decided to change my flight and stay for one more weekend. One of the bar owners here asked me to stay and help out a bit and hes gonna give me a place to sleep in exchange. That will probably will probably work out best since Kaleb's and My favorite team is in the Super Bowl GO BRONCOS. I had tentatively planned to go fishing with my friend Cory for Marlin but he got booked by a paying customer. We had planned to go far offshore and stay overnight on the boat and fish for 2 days. He has another opening near the middle of the month...

Feb 1, 2014 - Day 5

We apologize for delay in entries and will try and get caught up today. After breakfast today, we were given the opportunity to travel into the actual town of Tamarindo for shopping and sightseeing. (Because we have been working mainly at night, we forget how hot the days actually are but we all are enjoying being out of the winter weather!) This area is very rural but still has a very large tourist presence due to the nesting habits of many of the large sea turtles. Because this is a national park, all areas are heavily regulated including...

Jan 31, 2014 - Day 4 at the Turtle Research Center

We were up again at 10:30 and enjoyed another great family breakfast with our team at Kike's restaurant. Always an adventure ordering in Spanish but we have great waiters that are patient with us plus have a great English vocabulary. We had free time to enjoy another romp in the ocean plus time in the refreshing pool. Our feet were grateful to be out of our sneakers and the water was very therapeutic for all of us. We joined the team leaders on an excavation of previously hatched nests, to collect data. This involved digging up the previous...

Jan 30, 2014 - Day 3 of the Leatherback Project

(Seeing we at mainly working nights, this blog is going to get confusing on our part as well as yours so bare with us!) After crawling (and I do mean crawling) into bed at 6 am, we managed to grab a few hours of sleep so we could get up for 11 am breakfast. Everything we are eating tastes great and we are gobbling it down In record time. We have been introduced to a fruity-type of milkshake for breakfast and we have to admit they are extremely tasty. After we returned back to the research center, the afternoon is ours to relax, nap, or...

Jan 30, 2014 - Tamarindo winding down

Well I'm only here a few more days and will be flying out on Saturday for Puerto Jiminez. I really like this town and will definitely be coming back despite the fact that it's probably the most expensive town in central america. I met a ton of people here and just last night I noticed I stopped and talked to probably 10 people on my way to supper, which is 100 meters from my condo. It's kinda nice to have friends and acquaintances all over. I was hoping to do some offshore fishing with my friend Cory but that only works if his boat isn't...

Jan 29, 2014 - Getting to The Research Center

PURA VIDA ! (Life is good/pure life!) Our day started leisurely with a wonderful Costa Rican breakfast at our hotel and then headed back to the airport to catch our tiny airplane to Tamarindo to meet up with our research team. After fretting for days and constantly weighing our luggage, Karen and Carol sailed through the check-in process and got their boarding passes. Dale was next and suddenly there was some confusion at the gate and a lot of unfamiliar Spanish being spoken. The bottom line was that Dale had a minor speed bump and hadn't...

Jan 27, 2014 - Bula Bula

Well the BBQ turned out even better than we'd hoped. We had a feed of Mahi Mahi and shrimp that would have made a king jealous and Bob did a great job on the grill. I helped out with a pack of potatoes and zucchini in foil that was also pretty good. Great food and some laughs on the deck till midnight. Yesterday we went 5 minutes up the river to a little town called Bula Bula. Nice little quiet spot. Had some civeche and swordfish with a couple of strawberry coladas. Came back about mid afternoon and made plans for supper and s show. I had...

Jan 25, 2014 - Another day in Costa

Well another interesting day yesterday. Morning walk on the beach. A couple of beer on the beach then home for lunch. Fresh avocados and tomatoes. Did some Spanish lessons on my phone app and then went to my buddy Bob's for a few drinks around the pool I got a nice pink color at the pool and we headed down to Nibbana for happy hour. A few mojitos there and we went back to Bob's for a BBQ of burgers and pasta salad. We sat around the rest of the night listening to music and laughing as the neighbors came and went. I know it doesn't sound...

Jan 26, 2013 - Turtles

Beautiful day in Tamarindo. Tonight I went to see the Green Pacific Sea Turtles dig holes on the beach and lay their eggs. It was amazing! The pictures of the turtles aren't good because you can't use a flash.
