Jan 30, 2014 - Day 3 of the Leatherback Project

(Seeing we at mainly working nights, this blog is going to get confusing on our part as well as yours so bare with us!) After crawling (and I do mean crawling) into bed at 6 am, we managed to grab a few hours of sleep so we could get up for 11 am breakfast. Everything we are eating tastes great and we are gobbling it down In record time. We have been introduced to a fruity-type of milkshake for breakfast and we have to admit they are extremely tasty. After we returned back to the research center, the afternoon is ours to relax, nap, or...

Jan 30, 2014 - Tamarindo winding down

Well I'm only here a few more days and will be flying out on Saturday for Puerto Jiminez. I really like this town and will definitely be coming back despite the fact that it's probably the most expensive town in central america. I met a ton of people here and just last night I noticed I stopped and talked to probably 10 people on my way to supper, which is 100 meters from my condo. It's kinda nice to have friends and acquaintances all over. I was hoping to do some offshore fishing with my friend Cory but that only works if his boat isn't...

Jan 29, 2014 - Getting to The Research Center

PURA VIDA ! (Life is good/pure life!) Our day started leisurely with a wonderful Costa Rican breakfast at our hotel and then headed back to the airport to catch our tiny airplane to Tamarindo to meet up with our research team. After fretting for days and constantly weighing our luggage, Karen and Carol sailed through the check-in process and got their boarding passes. Dale was next and suddenly there was some confusion at the gate and a lot of unfamiliar Spanish being spoken. The bottom line was that Dale had a minor speed bump and hadn't...

Jan 27, 2014 - Bula Bula

Well the BBQ turned out even better than we'd hoped. We had a feed of Mahi Mahi and shrimp that would have made a king jealous and Bob did a great job on the grill. I helped out with a pack of potatoes and zucchini in foil that was also pretty good. Great food and some laughs on the deck till midnight. Yesterday we went 5 minutes up the river to a little town called Bula Bula. Nice little quiet spot. Had some civeche and swordfish with a couple of strawberry coladas. Came back about mid afternoon and made plans for supper and s show. I had...

Jan 25, 2014 - Another day in Costa

Well another interesting day yesterday. Morning walk on the beach. A couple of beer on the beach then home for lunch. Fresh avocados and tomatoes. Did some Spanish lessons on my phone app and then went to my buddy Bob's for a few drinks around the pool I got a nice pink color at the pool and we headed down to Nibbana for happy hour. A few mojitos there and we went back to Bob's for a BBQ of burgers and pasta salad. We sat around the rest of the night listening to music and laughing as the neighbors came and went. I know it doesn't sound...

Jan 26, 2013 - Turtles

Beautiful day in Tamarindo. Tonight I went to see the Green Pacific Sea Turtles dig holes on the beach and lay their eggs. It was amazing! The pictures of the turtles aren't good because you can't use a flash.

Apr 11, 2012 - Last days in costa rica

The last few days were interesting we saw a crime scene were the guy grabs a lady's wallet and ran for it but another guy tackled him to the ground and sat on him until the police came it was cool. That night we had pizza it was so good the cheese was bubbling off the dough and they gave us giant knives! The Pizza was so good.I tried surffing it was so hard the board came up and hit me in the face numerous times because the waves were so big it hurt.We got to sit at the bar and have piña coladas they were really pineappley but good. I missed...

Dec 17, 2010 - Sand, Surf, Sun

Tamarindo has a long, curved beach, mostly sand but lots of clusters of rocks to avoid in the surf. There is an estuary in the north end that reminds me of Port Renfrew. The waves are very much like Long Beach. Other than the beach, there is really no beauty here. No wildlife or vegetation to write about. For a fee, I could tour the nearby nature reserve but I think I will soon have enough of that in my upcoming jungle adventure. My overall impression of the people in this northern province is that they are clean, honest and emotionally...

Jul 8, 2010 - Playa Tamarindo

We spent three nights at the beach in Tamarindo, a surf town on the Pacific coast. The hostel was really nice and the town had a lot more backpackers than Playa del Coco. Unfortunatel it didn't stop raining pretty much the whole time. The weather was sunny early in the mornings but then absolutely poured every afternoon and evening. We got up early to make the most of the sunshine and tried out surfing again. A couple of locals on the beach offered us surf lessons, but when we declined they told us to go back to our own country... charming....

Sep 5, 2009 - DAY 15 - Surfing: take two

I woke up early again and went for a short run, which was rather painful after a day of surfing. I was secretly hoping that my hip hurt because I had incurred a debilitating injured, solely so I could sound super cool and tell people that a surfing injury prevented me from running the marathon this year. Fortunately (or unfortunately?), I think it is just a bruise. We did not have to return the surf boards until noon so we hit the waves again after breakfast. Unfortunately, the tide was low in the morning and the waves were awful. Trevor...

Sep 4, 2009 - DAY 14 - Surfing

After a filling breakfast at home, we headed to the Barcelo to rent surf boards. At first my fear of ocean waves kept me glued to the boogie board. But once I realized that more water was being splashed in my face on the boogie board than would probably occur if I were standing on a board I decided to try surfing. I definitely took my share of digs, but I also caught a handful of waves. Surfing is so much fun! I can see how people visit Tamarino to surf and end up staying here forever. We were starving after a tough battle with the ocean...

Sep 3, 2009 - DAY 13 - Critter hunt

I didn’t make it through my entire run this morning. My runs are getting longer, and there is only so much time after sunrise that it is cool enough to train. I convinced myself that running on the beach and in crazy humidity counts extra so I stopped ½ mile short. I need to figure something out before my next run, which is significantly longer. A good thing about running in the mornings is that I see all kinds of animals that are not out in the afternoon. This morning I heard monkeys and saw their tracks all over the beach, and saw angel...
