Feb 14, 2014 - Fortuna

Our hotel in Fortuna is just so fabulous! We are in individual units surrounded by lush landscaping everywhere. There is a spa, hot springs, and pool. The walk to the restaurant takes you by plants, birds, lakes. In the morning we drive to the town of Los Chiles in the Cano Negro Refuge to cruise the Rio Frio. Here we are able to see many birds, caimans, crocodiles, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, iguanas, lizards, etc. all are plentiful, some more photographable than others In the afternoon there is a trip to Baldi Hot Springs, but...

Feb 10, 2014 - Hanging Bridges and the long trip to Guanacaste

We arose again to a lovely view of the Fortuna volcano out out front door. It is amazing to think we are staying at the base of a live volcano that last erupted in 1968.... Who knows when the next event will happen but we decided it was worth the risk. We took a short trip from our hotel to the nearby rainforest to experience hanging bridges. We had a choice of 3 different routes and intensities but the 6 of us were up for the full challenge and set out on the longest one that would take us about 1 3/4 hours to complete. We weren't quite...

May 22, 2008 - Fortuna - lava and crocs

Fortuna is a busy tourist town, the main attraction being Volcano Arenal - one of the most active in Central America. The volcano is often shrouded in cloud but the weather gods must have been smiling on us as we had some great views of the smoking cone. No night time photos as unfortunately we couldn´t get the setting right on the camera - far too technical! Did another morning canoe trip, this...

May 3, 2008 - The Volcano Arenal at Fortuna

We have had a great day today. Since the distance to be covered was not huge we didn’t have to hurry unduly. I spent a while on the terrace of our room firstly watching the wildlife and secondly catching up on the official report. I saw several interesting birds – yellow breasted, brilliant red and black and pale blue as well as a passing heron – and saw fish move in the lake. Diana spotted an iguana outside her room. Last night I almost trod on a snake on the way to dinner! The frogs were active and we could hear howler monkeys in the...
