Jan 29, 2008 - Final day in the countryside - not a very active day today

I'm falling further behind on my entries so to try and catch back up t o spped the next few days may be a bit shorter than they have been, but I'll do my best. Some wedding day photos have been posted on facebook and I'll try to link them to my facebook page as soon as I can. Today we had a bit of a sleep in and then some computer time to try catch up on these entries I keep dropping further behind in. NIkki went up to help Tonys grandmother and mum make some of her favourite (deepfried) dishes for lunch, photos coming. Again there was...

Jan 28, 2008 - Day 2 in the countryside, a bit of a struggle

One thing to note here too that I forgot to put in yesterdays entry is that I found over here I often am referred to as "nikki's sister" or even by Nikki herself "my sister". Positions tend to be used more than names. But yesterday Nikki taught Tonys family at his uncles house my actual name and so they take great pride in using it now, especally during meal times when toasting or making be drink by saying ganbei. Today was not going to be an easy day after the "celebrations" of the night before but I struggled through. Lunch today was at...

Jan 27, 2008 - Out to the countryside, no longer able to delay the inevitable, squatting toilets :P

Thankfully after a quiet night last night getting up and finishing packing wasn't too hard. I was trying to lightn my load and after Nikki telling me she wouldn't drnk my duty free vodka I decided to offer it to Jemma to take home with her. Tony overheard me give it to her and asked Nikki why I didn't give it to them. She hadn't thought that his family may enjoy it (ie enjoy the novelty of something diffrent). So I did an indian give and it wasback in the pile of things to take to the country side (bad choice should have left it...

Jan 26, 2008 - KTV, last night in Dezhou

After our almos midnight snack (dinner) last night, everyone was keen for a sleep in this morning. Nikki and Tony spent the night at the country side in their "wedding room" and we were expecting them back some time today as tonight was booked for a night out for the foreigners and some of Tonys school friends in Dezhou About 12ish, the message came through from our newly weds that they were on their way home and would pick up KFC in anyone wanted it. When they arrived we found out that once we had all left the country side, Tony parents...

Jan 25, 2008 - WEDDING DAY

So the big day has arrived!!! The plan was to be ready for when the car picked us up to go to the wedding place that would do our hair and make up at 7am. A 6-6:30 wake up should have given us enough time to shower ( all four girls were praying ( unanswered) for hot water, but as I will learn after three days in the countryside a shower, even cold, is better than a bowl wash). I was lucky enough to miss out on the last ten minutes of my planned sleep by a call from Leah and I then had to madly find some suitable clothing to head down and...

Jan 25, 2008 - WEDDDING DAY part 2

OK, here goes for part 2 of wedding day frivolities. I don't know if I've mentioned the clothes yet so I;ll start here. Nikki had two dresses for the day, a "traditional white" and chinese qi-pao (pronounced chi pow). She started the day in her white, slightly poufy (it had a hoop) srapless gown with a white fur which she tried not to use but the cold got the better of her at times. The bodice was embroidered and there is a faint touch of gold thread through the dress as ell. It really was a beautiful dress but like any bride(zilla) she...

Jan 24, 2008 - Meet the parents - our first visit to the countryside

SO today we had to be up and ready to catch taxis to the countryside by 9am. I had also been woken last night with the suggestion that if I could have some sthings packed to take out that would be good too, so I was up and showered with my main back pack packed and ready to go for 9am. I seem to be getting better at packing the bag (the fact that I have to wear like 7 pieces of clothing at a time certainly takes some bulk out of the bag) and I also am planing what things I can jetison along the way to make room for souvenirs and presents......

Jan 23, 2008 - Dining out in China

So I haven't really explained the phenomenon that is eating in China... Tonights dinner was a perfect example and I will try my best to explain it here for you. To start with we headed up the street that our hotel was on looking for somewhere suitable to have a simple dinner, the other guys (bridesmaids, Nikki and Tony and SAm and Liam ) all vetoed the first place we passed - Hot Pot (see 28Jan entry for details, we had it last night and I quite enjoyed it), and the next option seemed to involve bbq ing meat out on the street and then...

Jan 23, 2008 - The morning after the night before. Chinese KFC

So this morning brought with it the headache you still get whether the beer is 3%, 5% or vodka... memo to self - never again (at least until next time) To make matters worse Nikki bashed on the door bell too early wanting water as she had none left in her cooler/heater thingy. This morning we went back to town to get Mel (bridesmaid who arrived overnights) nails done, I just sat quietly in the corner, and also Nikki had had one of her nails burnt last night and this needed fixing. Conveniently it was also the same one she had accidentally...

Jan 22, 2008 - My first day in Dezhou - nails, foot massages and interesting sales pitches

(Added 25 Jan - Alright, weddings over, the nails can come off, hopefully I can get these overdue entries finished with much less difiiculy typing. Also, with the arriva of more foreigners I have had more conversation and not feeling so unco when I go to speak English after listening to Mandarin for a few days.) Today was of course my birthday, so thank you to those that sent me messages on facebook/here and mobile. If (like Dad) you got confused about which phone I am carrying, I will get your message in March and thank you then. On the...

Jan 22, 2008 - My Birthday - big night out in Dezhou

After a Nana nap in the afternoon, it was time to head off to my "Birthday party" organised by Tonys cousin. We went to KTV which is a room with a big screen, stereo and microphones - karaoke. I don;t know what it is about me and overseas holidays but I won't karaoke in Austrlia but always seem in a position to "have" to do it when I'm away (same deal in NZ). This was a night where I learned (as if I didn;t know) that even though it may be 3% beer, if you drink enough 3% beer, you will still feel sick in the morning. It also doesn't help...
