Aug 26, 2015 - Hong Kong, China

Pete called from Hong Kong and things were going well. The passengers for the last cruise departed in the morning and then the ship was sailing to Keelung, Taiwan with no passengers to re-position for the next cruise which turns around in Keelung, instead of Hong Kong. Pete said there were a number of parties planned and that, at least in the entertainment division, folks were looking forward to a night off. They will have another re-positioning day next week after the guests leave the ship in Keelung and the ship heads back to Hong Kong.

Pete checked in from Hong Kong and things were going fine. The temperature is hot in Hong Kong because of the storm, with high temperatures around 90. They are keeping an eye on the weather but are heading south out of harm's way. Weather reports online today say that the storm may skirt along the edge of Taiwan, rather than actually making landfall, which will certainly be a blessing for those folks. The ship will be visiting a couple of ports in Vietnam, including having an overnight stay in Ho Chi Minh City. As of today, Pete has...

Aug 16, 2015 - Hong Kong, China

Today was Turnaround Day on the ship and everything was moving along as planned. Pete is getting along fine with his new roommate, Jun, although it sounds as if it is a bit challenging to accommodate Jun's sleep schedule which pretty much ends up being 4 hours awake, 4 hours asleep, around the clock. His performance schedule is the same as Peter's but Jun doesn't have the additional responsibilities that Pete has in his Assistant Music Director job so Pete is working in his office part of the day every day. In general, Pete has been lucky...

Pete made it safely to Hong Kong and had a good night in a hotel before joining the ship this morning. At the last minute before leaving Indianapolis, he discovered that in the hurried process in getting home and with help from the crew travel service, he had duplicate return arrangements, both with his flight plans and for the hotel. Luckily, he was able to cancel the extras with refunds for both. He said everything was fine on the ship and they apparently had no problem living without him.

Pete is back in Hong Kong today for Turnaround Day. This is the first day of a short little cruise with only one other port besides beginning and ending in Hong Kong. Pete reports that cruising has become wildly popular in China and Royal Caribbean actually has several ships servicing the Asian ports right now. In light of Nana's declining health and bad news from her doctor yesterday, Pete has started to make arrangements to come home, in the event of an emergency. The ship staff is very helpful and will help him with plans to return to...

Today was Turnaround Day on the Voyager and things were going well when Pete checked in. He had visited Disney Hong Kong and had picked up a new hat and t-shirt to add to his collection. The weather has been hot but not unbearable so he has enjoyed getting off the ship and getting a little exercise walking around getting to and from the port.

Pete arrived safely in Hong Kong with no complications with his flights or his luggage. He spent the night in a nice hotel in Hong Kong and then the Royal Caribbean shuttle took him, other crew members who were signing on, and guests from the hotel to the ship. He jumped right back into action with a safety drill and 2 production shows that night. His new roommate is Jun, a trumpet player from the Philippines. He seems to be settling in just fine.

Jul 16, 2015 - Noah's Ark

Noah's Ark is a theme park with a Christian theme (Noah's Ark and the science of Ark discovery and animal life). It was opened in 2009 and it is a very large park with life size replicas of animals outdoors and lots of science-based exhibits inside the life sized Ark. (You can go inside the Ark.) It also has outdoor sports facilities and a resort hotel. You can see the Tsing Ma Bridge from this theme park. The Tsing Ma Bridge is the world's longest suspension bridge. It links Lantau Island (where the airport is located) to the rest of Hong...

Jun 25, 2015 - Hong Kong Days 2 & 3

Last post from Hong Kong. Only been here two days and I think I could stay forever. I can already find my way around Central and Soho sans map and guide book. Thanks to the time change I am waking up promptly at 4:15AM everyday but that’s OK, things will settle eventually. Gives me time to sit and muse over things. Yesterday I braved a boat for the first time in years, and on not so smooth seas at that! Yes I did turn green after about 5 minutes but managed to not hurl so I count that as a victory! I explored the waterfront yesterday and...

Jun 23, 2015 - Hong Kong Day 1

Well it’s official, just mail me the cat I’m not coming home! I am in love with Hong Kong lol Today I braved my first typhoon, ok well so it’s more like a really bad rain storm, but still it said typhoon on the news! It poured most of the morning until around 11 then cleared so I decided it was time to venture out. Being I had stayed in central with the express purpose of walking everywhere I was quite happy with that development! First stop of the day Man Mo Temple just blocks from my hotel. What an amazing place! You really feel a world...

Jun 22, 2015 - Touchdown!

Well after a rather harrowing start of nearly missed flights, sprints through terminals, and over booked and delayed flights I have made it to Hong Kong! And let me tell you this place puts just about everywhere else I have been to shame!!! Someday I am going to get a really cool seatmate for one of these long flights……this was not that flight! I think the man next to me spent the whole time with his finger up his nose. *shudder* Thankfully I slept through the majority of the flight and left him to continue his nasal archaeology in peace....

May 27, 2015 - A bit further down the road

Before I go any further a couple of corrections to my last entry. They weren't Belgian whales, they were Beluga whales, and we didn't need a pesky it should have been an Esky and the spray was an Osprey. Blame the predictive text and my inattention. Before leaving Banff we took the gondola 2451 metres to the top of Sulphur Mountain where we had fantastic views east and west over Banff and the Bow Valley. In our wanderings on the mountain we saw big horn sheep and a Marmot which doesn't look at all like a squirrel but apparently is a...
