Nov 24, 2017 - Cruising the Li River

Cruising the Li River from the city of Guilin to Yangzhou is an 83km journey, taking about 4.5 hours. The trip is considered and one of the top river journeys in the world, so it was pretty disappointing to board on a very rainy day. In the end we were really happy with the pictures because, like black & white photographs, the many tones of misty mountains provided a great depth of detail that we could not capture in the sunny days that followed.

Nov 22, 2017 - Karst & Caves of Guilin

One of the most visited cities in China, Guilin’s popularity is, like Banff in my home province, all about its geography. Here, striking karst hills and towers poke above a flatland well-suited to rice paddies and studded with lakes. If the scenery looks familiar to you it’s likely because so very many famous Chinese landscapes were panted in the area, or maybe you recall it as Chewbacca’s home planet in a Star Wars film. As with people, the true beauty of Guiling is not just on the surface. There’s been a great deal of work done to ensure...

Nov 21, 2017 - Lakeside in Guilin

Guilin is a large city, but as we were using it as a transit point in/out of Yangshou we never ventured far from the Central lakes, which were right out our door. Two beautiful pagodas are the focal point for lakeside strolls, and that pleasant walk was right out our door. We looped the multiple lakes once in the daylight and then again at night. The other attractions in Guilin, besides the caves and landscape, were parks at the base of the hills - requiring an entrye fee and a charge to climb to the summit. We took a pass on those,...

Nov 13, 2016 - In Guilin

Nov 9, 2016 - The mountain calm...

I’m on a train again…. This time from Guilin to Kunming…. After 5 days in the mountains in the south of China. Last time I wrote I was within the last few hours of my journey over to Guilin, the train journey which finished without incident. We arrived at Guilin station at about 4pm and, after waiting for all the pushing Chinese to get off the train, I made my way to the exit of the station. I was heading towards Yangshou – about 40 miles south east of Guilin and I had read that there were a few different ways of getting there. I could...

Aug 16, 2016 - Guilin, Chine

NOT!!!

Jun 28, 2015 - Guilin Day 3 & 4

Tony played tour guide for me again, the man needs to do this for job seriously! He has been so great! First stop was the last remaining Jingjiang Mausoleum/Tomb in the area. There were once 13 but the rest have been dug up. It’s really so beautiful! Tony found us a tour guide and listened to everything she had to say before giving me the whole tour himself, our cab driver even joined us for part of it. I have never ridden so many kinds of transportation in my life as I have the last several days! Admittedly Tony’s scooter is my favorite...

Jun 27, 2015 - Guilin Day 2

I am assimilating! By the end of my day out with Tony yesterday I was no longer speaking in full sentences. But what a day! Guilin is so very different from everything I know, but I still feel very safe and comfortable here. Though I am a bit of a curiosity to the locals! I have been asked to pose for pictures with random people on the street. To top that off I have learned the 3 steps to ensure you are the center of attention: Step 1) be an American female with bright red hair Step 2) acquire a reasonably good looking local with his own...

Jun 25, 2015 - Guilin Day 1

We have made it to Guilin! Avoided air sickness despite taking off in a typhoon and quite a bit of turbulence, almost lost my lunch but managed to keep everything down. Had a nice freak out moment when I landed as I was not adequately ready for just how rural it really is here, I actually had a small panic attack thinking that somehow I had landed at the wrong place……we are NOT in the city anymore lol and once again my cab ride confirms my driving skills would be money in this country! We played chicken with a bus for like 2 miles, it was...
