Oct 23, 2018 - dad's perspective: tennis in china

Tennis in China: Focus, Discipline, POWER, Nike, and Yonex are words that come immediately to my mind when reflecting on our tennis experience in China. The cultural approach to training in Asia for our sport is very different than what we see in the West. According to the coaches at the academy who have been in Asia for many years, variety is not a big part of development. Most game styles I have witnessed are the same, hug the baseline and hit extremely hard and flat. First strike tennis is the name of the game and points are ending...

Oct 19, 2018 - dad's perspective: chinese culture and history

China Culture and History Judgement as influence by naivety, media and lack of knowledge is best to be kept to oneself! Through my Far East travels and cultural immersion the past 4 weeks, I have gained a perspective that I am embarrassed (and at the same time proud) to say is quite different than my preconception. China is an unbelievable Country and it’s people are of the most respectful, diligent, and humble kind I have ever been so fortunate to come across. The number of times I have been assisted with a huge smile is endless. Having...

Oct 14, 2018 - my global perspective

My Global Perspective Ryan Wuhrman Prior to visiting the far East, the only exposure I have had to Asian customs was in my Mandarin class at Palm Beach Day Academy and an occasional visit to the Panda Express down the street. I used to despise taking this class when I was younger and often made fun of the language with my friends referring to class as "ching chong chinese". I had no idea why I was in the learning something that seemed so apparently different. Middle school was nearing when I began to change my thinking and realized how...

Oct 14, 2018 - guangzhou part 2

What a whirlwind 36 hour experience Hong Kong Island provided. My adrenaline was flowing as the intensity of that city grabbed my brain and took me away from the routine in Communist China where the people are so simple and pleasant. We were impulsed with tons of shopping (LuLu Lemon/Brandy Melville/Lush) and many modern conveniences! I am happy to have returned to another full week of 12 "spinny" table meals, 11 more tennis practice sessions, 6 fitness sessions and 2 massages. Guangzhou and the tennis academy my dad is working at and I am...

Mar 10, 2018 - The journey is over, and I am home again.

So, a 3.10 departure from Guangzhou's Baiyun airport, so late, and I was so very tired. Not really time to get a sleep though, as we landed in Kuala Lumpur at around 7.30, then just time to get through the airport to the next departure gate. Around an hour and a quarter, which was enough, but no time to dally!! Off again, and I think I was dozing on and off all the way to Perth. We landed on time, and did not take too long to get to the gate this time. I staggered through the arrivals, cleared immigration, then headed to the baggage...

Mar 9, 2018 - Leaving Zhaoqing.

Quite a sad day, but also busy, getting final packing done, washing done, and actually dry, floors cleaned etc. Frankle had been messaging me during the day. He has meetings all day, for some special guests in the educational field, and then dinner. Then later this evening we will leave for the airport. He is a busy, busy guy, with a full day, and then off to the airport, on his way to meet with one of his business partners in Guangzhou. I have no doubt there will be a lot of screen time for these two guys, and precious little sleep! I met...

Mar 8, 2018 - Dinner - Denise's family, and the Hu family!

A somewhat busy day today. Lunch with Denise over the road at the little cheap restaurant. And around that, mostly packing and sorting what I need to take home, and what can stay here until I return. Hopefully that will be in October. We had arranged to pick Melrose up on the way to the restaurant, so I messaged her to let her know we were on our way. And amazingly, we got through the city smoothly, to collect her from near the Golden Diamond Hotel. I love going out for a meal with these guys, because they know places that I would never...

Mar 7, 2018 - Coffee with Yoyo, and then dinner with Jane, Robin and his wife.

A lovely day today, with lots of catching up with friends, old and new. Denise escaped from the library in the morning, and came up for a coffee, and then we went and had lunch at a little place over the road from the back gate. Interesting little, very local eating spot. There are bamboo steamer boxes with cooked rice in, and at the counter you get to choose two or three meat varieties, which get put on top, and then over the steamer until cooked. It is a great lunch, and very cheap, 8rmb for two meats, or 10 for three. And it comes with...

Mar 6, 2018 - Yay! Melrose is back in Zhaoqing.

Well, today is a day I have been looking forward to. Melrose has arrived back from her holiday, and we are going to catch up in the afternoon. I got a bus into town, and as I was heading for the underpass to get over the road, I saw a lovely new display of flowers over the road from Paifang. Not sure what is the significance of this display, but they are beautiful. As I took photos, I had a young woman come up and speak to me. She spoke reasonable English and told me her English name is Shannon, and she loves making chocolates. Not sure if...

Mar 5, 2018 - Two Grannies to collect Qianyu from kindy today!!

Last night, Shelly suggested that we go and collect Qianyu together, from kindergarten. Little one loves to have two grannies to collect her. So I went and waited at the hairdressing shop for Shelly, and filled time taking phone photos of leaves. I love the close up features on my phone. I wanted her to help me to buy some of the gel for my hair, like what he had used when he cut it. But he has no small container. He will have it by tomorrow, and Shelly will collect it for me, when she goes back for a deep treatment for her hair. On we went...

Mar 4, 2018 - Lunch with Winnie, her family, her friend Shelly, and their family.

Today was lunch in the Grandbuy building, with Winnie and Liao, and of course Iona. Also present were Gary's sister, who has been Winnie's friend since middle school, her husband and their fourteen year old daughter. Lunch was nice, with lots of things that I really like, and we sat about for a couple of hours after eating. I had a puzzle for them to solve for me. I am intrigued by the number plates on the cars, and am interested to know how to work out how many possible combinations there would be. But there is dissent among the...

Mar 3, 2018 - A village wedding - what a day of errors!!

Today I was expecting to be picked up around 4pm, to go out to a village, for the wedding of one of Liao's nephews. Winnie decided to let Liao go in the morning, and spend the whole day, but that she would go later in the day, for the dinner. It is a very long day for Iona, and boring for her, so that was a good plan. So, in the morning, I headed over to Melrose's house, to give her plants one last watering, and to give the floors a mop over, before she gets back to Zhaoqing. I decided to go into Chain Mart on the way, because I needed...
