Sep 25, 2017 - Results of MRI

After checking the website all day, waiting for the results, at 6pm they come through. A day earlier than expected! Of course the results are in Spanish and in Doctor 'talk' so we get in a taxi and go back to the Emergency Department. Fortunately, we don't have to wait in a queue and are shown to a trauma room and one of the Trauma Doctors explains that Phil has herniated a disk in his lower back. No treatment can be done here in Santiago in the short term. Phil has been in a lot of pain so we figured it was more than muscular pain. We are...

Sep 23, 2017 - Movies and shopping

Today we need to send back the completed form to the travel insurance company for Phil's Doctor to release information regarding his health. They need to make sure his back is not a pre-existing condition. We visit our favourite Internet Cafe and Kelvin is there to help us yet again with the scanning and we send the email off to Sydney. We have a coffee on the way back to the apartment at our favourite cafe, Migalito. It's late morning and we catch a taxi to Mall Parque Aruco, a shopping centre with cafes and a cinema complex. We wander the...

Sep 22, 2017 - Another visit to the Hospital

Phil's back is still very painful and he is getting more pain down his leg and a lot of numbness. He wants to go back to the Hospital, so we head off mid morning. We know the ropes, so this time it is easier and we know what to expect. We see a different Doctor and he is concerned that Phil has less resistance when pushing with his right leg and big toe than his left leg. The Doctor that saw Phil last Monday pops his head in to the cubicle and the two Doctors have a discussion in Spanish and he leaves. Phil has 4 different types of pills...

Sep 18, 2017 - Independence Day

It's Chile's National Independence Day. Phil is still having back problems and lots of pain so we whatsapp our host for the name of a good Hospital near us. Carmen comes back with Hospital Clinico de la Universidad Catolica. At 11 am we catch a taxi there and it's not too far. The Hospital seems okay, fairly modern and the staff are helpful even though we don't speak Spanish and they don't speak English. We seem to muddle through. We wait about an hour and then see a very nice Doctor who speaks English. He explains that Phil needs to give...

Sep 17, 2017 - Puntas Arenas to Santiago

A late start and a great breakfast then a rest until we check out at midday, for the airport and our flight back to Santiago, which leaves at 2.15. Whilst checking out we chat to a Russian man, living in Germany and working as a software developer, who is also on our flight. We offer to share a cab but he has already called an Uber. We then meet up with him at the airport and we chat in the queue to check in our bags and also whilst waiting to board. He didn't want to share a cab but now we can't get rid of him! The return flight seems much...

Sep 8, 2017 - Visa for Brazil

A very stressful day today! Yesterday we caught a taxi to the Brazilian Embassy to try and sort out our visa for Brazil. We are told we are the wrong office and have to go to another office of the Embassy. When we get there, they are closed. Today we make the trip again. We have already tried to apply for the visa on line and haven't been able to get access to the form. We are prepared with a note in Spanish but at the Embassy they are not helpful and we are told they can't provide a paper form and we must do it all on line. That was a...

Sep 5, 2017 - Our apartment, Santiago Chile

Today a sleep in and we don't get up until 9am. We do some chores, a bit of hand washing and unpacking. It's good to have breakfast at home and we definitely didn't have eggs - a nice change! This morning we need to get on the internet to finalise some more of our adventure. We need to sort out the final few bookings for our visit to Patagonia and also we need to book our airfare from Bogota to Buenos Aires as Explore have contacted us wanting these details. The morning goes quickly and nothing is finalised but we are making some progress....

Jul 20, 2017 - Travel day back to Santiago

Another beautiful day, but a cold night. I hopped out of bed and turned the heat on at 6:00, then back in bed as the room warmed up. I got up at 7:30 and Jean at 8:00. We wanted to be at breakfast by 8:30, having learned our lesson yesterday. At 8:30 there were still scambled eggs and sausages left, yeah. After breakfast we stayed in the room until 10:30 (11:00 checkout). I settled our bill and then we waited in the lobby until our Mahinatur tour transfer appeared to take us to the airport. We were picked up about 11:50 and taken to the...

Jul 16, 2017 - Touring Santiago

We went down to breakfast and were lucky to get a table. There was a large group of girls on a tour(?)that were in the breakfast area and took over the majority of the room. It was a very nice breakfast buffet which we enjoyed before returning to the room to prepare for our morning tour of Santiago. Claudio met us in the lobby at 9:10 to conduct our tour. (The tour company was Condor Travel.). On the way to the first stop Claudio ran us through the history of the region, beginning with the indigenous people, the Mapuche. Santiago itself...

Jul 15, 2017 - Travel to Santiago

We left the hotel in Miami Airport about 6:30 to walk over to J terminal to the Avianca Airlines desk to check-in. Jean had received an email offer to upgrade our tickets before we left, and she did. A modest cost to upgrade to Business Class. Our tickets reflected the TSA precheck which took us past the normal security.. We had an 1 1/2 wait until boarding began. Having Business Class tickets, we were allowed to use the Avianca lounge. It was a nice, quiet lounge with a decent breakfast buffet, of which we took advantage. Imused the time...

Feb 28, 2017 - 26 February 2017 - Santiago, Chile

Arrived in Santiago today after around 15 hours flying time (via Auckland). We are staying at the Happy House hostel, quite comfortable and easy to get into town. On 27th we joined a walking tour of Santiago with a very entertaining guide who gave us an interesting overview of Chilean history - this lasted for 4 hours and after that we caught the metro back to our hotel and had a rest before our group meeting at 6pm then dinner at a steak restaurant. Our truck, Rosita, is parked outside the hotel ready for our departure in the morning. We...

Feb 27, 2017 - Walking

We had a free day in Santiago, and after a typical toast and cereal hostel breakfast, we made our way downtown for a free, tip-basis walking tour. Sights included the typical cathedral and presidential palace. Not typical was the bullet mark on a statue from the military overthrow of Allende. Also not typical was a dark windowed coffee shop. We were told that coffee was not of interest to Santiago folks, so female entrepreneurs decided to market coffee by having all female staff, the leggier the better. Shops were called coffee with legs....
