Sep 30, 2018 - Santiago

Today we hoped to hire bikes and ride on the closed roads. Santiago does this most Sundays if the weather is good and guess what, there is rain forecast and it's a bit bleak, so no raod closures and no cycling. It was our last Sunday here too, so disappointing that we won't get to do it. We decide to catch an Uber out to Costenera Shopping Mall. We have been there before and there is great shopping. I buy a casual dress, a skirt and a top. Phil looks around but doesn't buy anything. We have lunch there. Its warm and dry inside. We even get...

Sep 29, 2018 - Hairdressers and Grand Final

Today I have an appointmnet for a colour at the hairdressers where I had my pedicure done. My appointment is at 10.30. I explain my Aussie haidresser uses no 6 with ash and a toner and I dont like my hair 'yellow'. He wants to put in some foils which is I agree to. He is very fussy with the foils and actually puts bleach on the alfoil first and then lays the hair on that, adds more bleach and seals it all up. One they are all in I sit there for quite a while, must be at least 20-30 minutes. Then I go to the basin and "the apprentice" a...

A catch up day today. Unpacking from Easter Island and washing to go downstarirs to the laundry. We had time to ring Tessa and Shane and Justin and Sarah, so caught up on their news. Justin Sarah and Madi are off to Phuket for a few days as Sarah is on school holidays. Also this morning we start doing a little research on the internet as our next destination is Buenos Aires. There's some supermarket shopping to do this afternoon as we are eating in tonight. We have to go and change money, so before long the day is over.

Sep 27, 2018 - Easter Island to Santiago

Today we leave Easter Island and we are going to have one last attempt to visit the Orango Volcano. It’s still raining but very windy so we are hoping that will blow the cloud away and mean that we will be able to see the crater of the volcano and also the island that is part of the Birdman competition. We have brekkie at 8am and then head up to the office that sells the tickets to Orango and ask if there is cloud or not as we will only bother to catch a taxi up there if the weather is going to be favourable. We wait in the ticket office...

Sep 22, 2018 - Santiago

Today, some housekeeping. My flat black bag that I have for years that sits in the bottom of my suitcase, for small side trips, must have been dropped from a height on the way back from the Atacama, as the base which is a hard plastic has shattered. I'm worried that it won't proctect my things on the next trip to Easter Island so we go shopping for another one. We do find something suitable although I don't think the quality is marvelous. It will do though. Phil changes some more money as we dont think the rate of exchange will be any...

Sep 20, 2018 - Shopping

Slow start today, a bit of housekeeping at home and on the internet. Today Phil wants to go back to a shop he bought a nice pair of jeans from last time we were here. It's not down near the malls but over past Santa Lucia. We walk that way and find the store, Fashion Park. He tries on a few pairs and settles on a rust coloured pair of smart jeans. We then walk down the mall as we have to change some US$ to CLP. I am looking for an opticans that has the protein tablets to clean my lenses. I bought them here last time but be damned if I can...

We do get up very late these days. Its cool in the mornings and Santiago doesn't get going to at least 10am. We go for a walk aroung Barrio Lastarria and look for somewhere for a coffee. We end up at the place opposite the park and enjoy a cappacino. They are expensive here, 2 cups cost between A$10 and A$11. We go back to the apartment and have some lunch as we catch a taxi to All Military Day which is at Parque O'Higgins, right next to the fonda which finsihes today. We get there okay and then need to find a spot to be able to see the...

Sep 18, 2018 - Plaza de Armas

Its only 14C here today and a few showers are forecast hence the reason for the fonda yesterday. WE leave the apartment and go looking for a coffee place and immediately see Monjitas street is blocked off and there are quite a few dark colouted Mercedes Benz cars being let through the cordoned area. So we decide to follow them down towards Plaza de Armas to see what is going on. When we get to the square there are baracades and police, riot squad, army and lots of men in suits with earpieces. Further into the sqaure is the Church and lots...

Sep 17, 2018 - Fonda

Its the 17th today and a part of the Independence day holidays. The weather is good and tomorrow on the actual Independence Day it is going to rain so we decide to go to the fonda in Parque O'Higgins today. Firstly we need to exchange some money. Some things are open and some are not and unfortunately no money changers so we have to withdraw from an ATM at A13 a time! We get a coffee and wander back along one of the malls to one of the main roads to catch a taxi to Parque O'Higgins. It is A$10 entrance each and we go in and firstly have a...

Sep 16, 2018 - San Pedro de Atacama to Santiago

Up for breakfast right on start time of 7.45 as we are being picked up for the journey back to Calama and the flight to Santiago. There are 8 of us waiting and no-one is there. I go to reception to nicely say we need to go at 8am and just as I'm discussing with the man at reception the lady that looks after breakfast arrives. I suggested she start at 7.30 to be ready for 7.45. Anyway we rush through breakfast with what is there as it takes her 15 minutes or so to put everything out. We are collected at 8.15 and make the hour and a half...

Sep 10, 2018 - Teleferico

Today is a nice day weather wise and it's a Monday so we decide to ride the cable car at the Teleferico through the Metropolitan Park of Santiago. We catch a taxi and on arrival when we look up there are men crawling over the cable cars and the cables running between them. Oopps it's maintenance day! Oh well, we are going to have to walk the 4kms to the top to the image of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin placed on the highest point of Cerro San Cristóbal. The gradient is not too bad and it is a pleasant walk to the top. All the way...

Sep 9, 2018 - Santiago

Today we just need to do normal stuff. We order an Uber and go to Constenera Shopping Centre. A bit like a Westfield but bigger and oh so good. The uber driver had trouble reaching us as the streets are blocked off on Sunday for cycling. She calls on Phil's phone and we walk a few streets to meet her. We are grateful that she didn't give up on us. She has an interesting story. She is a vet nurse and lost her job. She does some casual work assisting in animal operations and drives Uber the rest of the time. Uber is not liked here so Phil has...
