Sep 8, 2018 - Santiago

Today we head up to the Malls to do a bit of shopping. We buy some baby clothes and some dresses and shorts for Madi for either Christmas or her birthday. Not much luck with things for us but it's nice to have a look around. Shopping takes so much longer here as we are not sure where to go and sizing. Some stores only let you take in 3 things to try on in the fitting room so you can't get several sizes of the one thing in case they don't fit. Oh well! We start back home to have some lunch and on the way I spot a hairdresser/beautician who...

Sep 7, 2018 - Our apartment, Santiago Chile

A late rise this morning. It's quite easy to sleep in here as it does not get light until 7.45 and our apartment is really quiet, so there is no noise to wake us. It's Friday night in Adelaide so we try and ring the kids. We stay in bed where its quite warm. We get hold of Luke first who is still in Adelaide and has to stay another night as his plane was cancelled. All good with him and Jess. Then we get hold of Tessa and Shane who are driving home from Shane's brothers 18th birthday dinner. All good with them and the future grandchild,...

Sep 6, 2018 - La Paz to Santiago

We are up early before breakfast, just as well as I'm still feeling the effects of the altitude. We catch at cab to the airport and arrive in plenty of time. I do manage to keep a coffee down before we fly and I'm really quite relieved to get on the plane. The flight is only 3 hours and Phil has paid US$19ea for row 1 seats which give us more leg room and we have no-one next to us so a pretty comfortable flight. We get a ham and cheese roll and a coke for lunch (not much for an international flight) and my headache has gone so all...

Hi all, Finally got around to entering something in the journal. After a 3hrs delay in Melbourne we got to our hotel in Santiago around 12.30am. A sleep then up the next day, shopping with Fran at the local market for the ingredients for lunch. Stopped for hot chocolate then off to Cecelia's to cook up a storm. First course was Sopaipilla, a small pancake made from pumpkin and deep friedserved with salsa. Next a beef dish with corn mash, desert was a custard apple mousse and tangerine syrup. Of course served with white and red wine from...

Feb 17, 2018 - Santiago & Valparaiso Chile

Santiago de Chile or simply Santiago, is the capital and largest city of Chile as well as one of the largest cities in the Americas. Santiago is named after the biblical figure, St. James. It is the center of Chile's largest and the most densely populated conurbation. The city is entirely located in the country's central valley. You can see the majestic Andean mountain range from almost anywhere in Santiago. We can visit the vineyards of Maipo Valley and sample Chilean wines, marvel over the antiquities at the Pre-Colombian Museum or...

Jan 9, 2018 - A day in Santiago

A day in Santiago started well when we received a call from a Chilean company told me that we had won a super prize in their lottery all I had to do was send money for the confirmation. All of this was in Spanish, so of course I sent my banking details. Next we walk to the hop on hop off bus, only to be chatted up by a middle aged man offering his wife and car as collateral for 100,000 peso, not a bad deal for £130, but Alison saved me ....... For the first time I am slightly concerned that we look like tourists and could be subject to...

Nov 19, 2017 - Santiago, Chile

I had arranged with my santiago Airbnb host to have someone pick me up at the airport. I was originally to have had my car but, well, we know that story. My host lives in a very different area of Santiago from where I stayed the first time. This is more the upscale financial district and there were beautiful houses and apartment buildings in gorgeous tree lined streets with nice restaurants. I got a shrimp and quinoa salad at a restaurant called Route 66 (very American) and then strolled down to the Costanera shopping mall. I've never seen...

Oct 22, 2017 - Santiago, Chile

My flight was uneventful and I actually slept a few hours and we arrived in Santiago at about nine in the morning. I went through immigrations and customs, I went and found the Eurocar stand at the arrivals. I've never seen so many people waiting for disembarking passengers in my life. There must've been 200 or 300 people with name signs waiting for people. I got in line and waited my turn at the Eurocar counter but when I got to the counter my car was not ready. This is because a few days prior to my departure from Los Angeles I realized...

Sep 26, 2017 - Royalty

We spent the morning relaxing and sorting out some information that the insurance company requires regarding our forward bookings of tours and flights. It is quite fortunate that we had not paid out any money for the two weeks that became available from the cancellation of the Venzuela tour, except some airfares. We had been talking to Nick from Nicks Adventures Bolivia about spending some time at San Carlos Ranch near the Amazon and also Pablo regarding a Colca Canyon Tour but we had not paid any deposits. Phil stayed home to rest his...
