Mar 4, 2019 - One dodgy empananda = Chile Belly for Grae

Poor Grae woke up with a case of Chile Belly which wasn't great when you have to be up early in Punta Arenas to drop off a hire car and catch a plane to Puerto Montt and pick up another hire car. Hopefully the views of the Grey Glacier and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the Andes mountains through the clouds cheered him up a bit. We arrived in Puerto Montt mid morning and seem to have an upgrade as we thought we'd hired a compact car and have ended up with a 4WD. We drove straight to our hotel in Puerto Varas also known as the city...

Jan 4, 2018 - Phew now back up to date and alive and well in Puerto Varas

This morning we visited the National Park and Lakes in the Llanquihue region and on Lago Todos los Santos. We are staying in lovely hotel Cumbres which is perched on the cliffs overlooking the bay. We are in the top floor in the roof with terrific views over to the Volcano, only if we could see them as they are shrouded in clouds or it is raining. We had a group tour today, and guess what we was the group. Our guide massimo was a lively chap and was constantly checking our knowledge of the region, geography and politics, so it ended up...

Mar 15, 2017 - to Puerto Varas 73 k

Wed Mar 15- to Puerto Varas 73 k 5:45 ride time Total ascents 768m =many hills. Cold southerly wind off the lake gusted through the night. 8C at 8am, so set off wrapped up warmly. Misty cloud over the volcano. Had to stop and eat big juicy blackberries even though we were full of porridge. Rode in the shade of steep hill, little waterfalls, road hugging the shore line. Quick shop in Las Cascadas as we weren’t sure we’d make it to P. Varas. GPS doesn’t tell us the topography, only the distance. Salmon farms in the lake. On a big climb 2 girl...

Jan 27, 2017 - Puerto Varas

At 11:40 we found our driver and left Hotel Explora with six other guests for a one and half hour drive to the airport at Puerto Natales. The airline took my extra heavy suitcase without hesitation or extra charge, and I noticed that in the lobby someone had trashed their walking sticks in a garbage can. I’m sorry I brought mine because everywhere we’ve been - the cruise, the Explora - readily had walking sticks available. Our plane left at 2 pm and headed back to Punta Arenas where we picked up more passengers. Then our route took us to...

Nov 23, 2014 - Puerto Varas, Chile

Day 7 We boarded our bus and bid farewell to the lovely town of Bariloche and traveled to Puerto Varas, Chile. We traveled from the east side of the Andes to the west side, from the dry side to the wet. We were on a well maintained, newer bus with two drivers. In Argentina drivers are limited to 4 hrs. driving. We are surprise at how safety minded these people are. It was a pleasant ride up though the Andes. The pass was only 3500 ft but there were high mountains on both sides that we could see from time to time when the clouds parted....

Jun 25, 2014 - volcanoes and bologna sandwiches

So we left Argentina, the land where wine is cheap, the locals don't sleep and there's dog poop everywhere;so watch your feet! After a 5hr bus ride up and over the highest peaks in the Andes and a uneventful boarder crossing we arrived in Chile. Almost instantly after crossing the Chilean border the landscape changed. The Argentinian Andes are subjected to roaring winds occasionally carrying volcanic ash;therefor, the landscape isn't very green. We crossed into the lake country of Chile which is so lush and green you expect to see King...

Dec 20, 2013 - The Lakes: Puerto Varas, Cochamo Valley

Los Lagos, Chile: Around and About ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 20 December 2013 Template text. Puerto Varas Los Lagos Leaving the big city of Santiago behind me I flew south to Puerto Montt, gateway to Los Lagos, or the Chilean Lake District. I was picked up at the airport and driven to Puerto Varas, a town of 32,000 on the banks of the Llanquehue (pronounced yank-EE-way) lake, a 325 sq mile body of fresh water framed by two huge...

Dec 11, 2013 - Our last two days in the Chilean Lake District...

True to form it was raining when we left Casa Molino this morning, but as we head North (I'm writing this on the plane and will later upload), it appears to be clearing. On Monday morning, we had to head into Puerto Montt to pick up the new car. Unfortunately the Garmin was not particularly good at finding the Hertz Office and we went round in circles for a while before we eventually found it, with me getting considerably more stressed as the time went by. Anyway we picked up the new “car”, and Hertz's definition of a truck is in fact a...

Dec 8, 2013 - A couple of great days in and around Casa Molino

We have had a couple of absolutely stunning days weather wise here in the Chilean lake district - it always looks a bit grey when we wake up for breakfast but then you slowly begin to see the volcanoes emerging from the cloud. We have even all caught a bit of the sun - and are not wrapped up in multiple layers. Saturday we headed north-east'ish to the waterfalls, Saltos del Petrohue - a little bit overrun with bus tours but spectacularly beautiful nevertheless and if you took the time as we did to walk a little further down the path, you...

Dec 5, 2013 - Refugia boat trip…..

So today it was meant to be raining all day and that looked like the case when we looked out the window early morning. I opened the emails to find the St. David's reports for Toby and Felix - well done boys on excellent reports. Mr Sinclair's description of Toby was absolutely glowing!! We headed off in the vehicle, stopped at a market where Mick bought red-headed woodpecker salad servers (not sure they will ever be used in my house, but Mick was happy)!! We then went to see a beautiful waterfall and rather than being rainy the weather was...

Oct 25, 2013 - Puerto Varas

This is the main area for tourism in the Chilean Lake region with Puerto Montt (20 minutes away) the commercial centre. As mentioned previously, heavy cloud cover deprived us of the magnificent and breathtaking Calbuco and Osorno volcano views however the slightly chilly weather was perfect for getting to know this little city, known as the City of Roses. As with Bariloche previously, we were surprised by the European influence, in particular the German settlers in this region. A short tour of nearby Puerto Montt, on the Pacific Ocean,...
