Aug 16, 2005 - Chile - La Serena

La Serena is an attractive city and is the capital of it`s region. It has a fairly modern feel and is nice enough to just stroll around the streets and plazas. We only two days in La Serena and the first was spent wandering around and seeing the sites. On the second day we decided to take a trip to the Elqui valley and took a collectivo taxi to Vicuna. The valley was nice and the town of Vicuna is also pleasant. We ate lunch in the main square (some freshly prepared sandwiches !) and then made our way to the Capel pisco distillery. We had a...

Aug 1, 2005 - Week of LOS FLOJOS

Whe're in America

Jun 3, 2005 - IV: La Serena & Vicuña 24.-28.5.2005

Chile on maantieteellisesti hassu maa.

It's another step northward and the now very familiar story of an overnight bus journey punctuated with a middle of the night border crossing, this time back into Chile. We are now in northern Chile which means no grass but hilly, arid desert. La Serena is the major town in the area, and we did stay here for one night, but the rest of the time we spent in Vicuna, a small town about an hour further down the road. The reasons for coming here were two fold... 1. Look at stars 2. Drink pisco 1. Looking at stars: Vicuña is supposed to be one...

Apr 23, 2005 - Ovalle y El Valle Del Encanto

ENGLISH TEXT BELOW Vendredi soir, je suis allee a l'observatoire Mamallurca.

Apr 20, 2005 - Chile, La Serena & Elqui Valley

16-04-05 / 18-04-05 The busride to La Serena was again an overnight trip, 14 hours this time. I am quite satisfied that I do sleep quite well in the semi cama busses. In La Serena I took a room in hostal Gregoria Fernandez, took some extra rest and went downtown to explore La Serena on foot. Apart from looking around at the nice neo-colonial buildings and lots of churches, there was not much to be done, on sunday the city was really deserted. The characteristic architectural style of the center however only dates from the 1950's when the...

Apr 6, 2005 - La Serena and the famous Chilean stars

"There can be no better land to live in than this one," Pedro de Valdivia, letter from Chile to Charles V of Spain, 1545. The seven-hour trip north from Santiago to La Serena had decent views (vineyards giving way to desert). I finished read the entire Bolivia chapter in my guidebook and made a rough plan of my time in Bolivia. I spent a few nights in a twin room with Jordan, a young Canadian and we ended up traveling together for a few days. We walked around the city's center the next day and by pure coincidence, found ourselves in the...

Apr 1, 2005 - Chile - La Serena

From Santiago we take a coach as Kinda the truck is still poorly and soon have the party feel as we are of to the sun and coast! We drive past endless vineyards and follow the snow capped spine of the Andes to La Serena. The temperatures are now starting to climb back up to what one normally associates with time away...though we know it will be short-lived. In the town we visit the Museo Arqueologico which reveals strange visions...shrunken heads from Equador, Atacama mummies and the highlight is of a moai from Easter Island (Rapa...

Mar 24, 2005 - La Serena...Oh How it Reminds me of Cuenca, Ecuador!

We arrived in La Serena pretty late, but luckily a man on the street offered us some help in locating a hostel-which he did. The funniest thing, was that he had spent many years in Australia and had aquired an Aussie accent...A spanish man with an aussie accent...frickin hilarious, it was hard for me not to laugh! Mike was really excited about La Serena, mostly because we arrived during a little storm, but the atmosphere there is really cool and the people here are very friendly. We did the old tourity thing here and bought postcards,...
