March 2 After lunch today, I took a small bus to the village of Pisco Elqui in the Elqui Valley. The name is not a coincidence. This region is a major producer of pisco, the strong grape-based liqueur used to make pisco sour, a popular drink found throughout Peru and Chile. In fact the climate in this region (sunny and dry) is ideal for growing grapes. Besides using them to make pisco and wine, grapes are exported abroad . @@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD We signed up for a full-day tour of the Elqui Valley after hearing about this amazing region famous for growing the grapes used in making pisco, the grape brandy widely consumed by Chileans throughout the country. We learned a tremendous amount from our tour guide, coincidently, a man the same age as me who had lived in Edmonton, of all places, for fourteen years before returning to live and work in La Serena. Oct 4, 2005 - Der letzte Tag im Elquital

Heute wollte ich endlich den oberen Teil des Elqui Tales etwas anschauen gehen. Der Bus brachte mich bis Pisco Elqui (Endstation des regelmässigen Busverkehrs) wo ich in einem sympathischen "Hostal", welches von Deutschen seit kurzem geführt wird, erst einmal gut Morgenessen ging (Adresse mit GPS Koordinaten werden später eingegeben). Ich wanderte nun noch eine Weile der Strasse entlang Talaufwärts, wobei die eindrückliche Berglandschaft und die vielen Reben zu erwähnen sind. Aus den Trauben wird neben Wein auch Pisco, das Nationalgetränk...
