Dec 18, 2016 - At Sea December 18 and 19

During these two days at sea we are headed to northerner 𯇨𯇱 Chile. It will take two days to get there. Yesterday when we were at San Martin/Pisco, the passengers who went on the very expensive excursion to Machu Picchu caught back up with the ship after being off for three days. They departed early on the first day i Lima, and the San Martin stop was mostly to give them a place to fly back in and resume sailing with the rest of the ship. We saw a couple of very interesting archaeology talk about how crowded Manchu Picchu is now and how...

Jun 20, 2015 - A Bus Journey to Remember...

This bus journey was one I'll remember for a long time. We boarded the bus on time and got given pillow and blanket - after reading a bit of my book, we settled down to get some sleep. After an hour later the bus stopped I just presumed it was due to the driver needing some rest and dosed back to sleep. Some 2 hours later we were still there and Sophie whispered to me we have been here hours. I then couldn't sleep, I was freezing as the engine had been off for hours and I realised we were in the middle of no where and the bus men had...

Jun 19, 2015 - To the Seaside in La Serena

Well we were warned the buses in South America aren't always the most reliable with timings and today was our first experience of that a nice 1 hour late our bus arrived. The Chilean people are not what I thought they would be like at all in terms of looks, many look like they are from all different cultures and backgrounds. They seem to be really lovely and helpful, but thank goodness I have Sophie - South America is not a place to come if you don't speak a word of Spanish, as they speak no English. I didn't know what to expect from Chile...

Jul 8, 2014 - Santiago to La Serena, Chile

Sunday 6th July 2014 Santiago to La Serena, Chile We had breakfast in the hotel today, then out to the supermarket to buy some snacks for the bus ride today. We left the hotel in taxis to go to the main Santiago bus station and caught the 11:40am bus north to La Serena, a coastal town about 450-500km north of Santiago. Once we left Santiago and the snow capped mountains in the distance, we drove through mainly hilly and beautiful countryside for about 6 and a half hours until we arrived at the bus station in La Serena, an old city that was...

Mar 12, 2013 - At Sea (2 days)

March 12, 2013 At sea. We had a nice leisure day, tonight is formal dress night with a Champaign fountain and chamber music in the piazza. The weather is getting warmer as we head north. March 13, 2013 At sea Another leisure day at sea. I have been getting up early to exercise. These late night 4 course meals are taking their toll. My body is beginning to take on the Ables male physique (think budda). The gym is packed in the mornings so I have been walking the promenade deck. One loop is 1800 feet so I figure I walk about 3 miles in about...

Mar 11, 2013 - Coquimbo and La Serena Chile

March 11 Coquimbo and La Serena Chile Coquimbo lies to the south of a crescent shaped bay with a narrow opening that leads to the Pacific Ocean. At the north end is the town of La Serena. The land rises fairly quickly from the bay so the houses are terraced up the sides of the hills that ring the bay. The ship docked parallel to the shore about 5 am this morning. From our balcony on the starboard side, we had a great view of Coquimbo. Unfortunately it was overcast and somewhat cool in the morning. We had a halve-day city tour scheduled for...

Mar 4, 2012 - Coquimbo & La Serena, Chile

Today we decided to take the ship’s shuttle bus from the port town of Coquimbo, Chile to the town of La Serena, Chile. This is about a 25 minute ride and we were dropped in the town square. It is Sunday so most of the traditional retail shops are closed. However, the craft market is open for part of the day mainly because our ship is in town. These ports do not get cruises ships every week. Mostly they have a season where the ships are transitioning from one part of the world to another and there will be a few ships here and there over the...

May 9, 2011 - Cycling 25km (I think)

So today has been really fun. The majority of our group went on a day trip to the Elqui Valley, however, it was rather expènsive so I along with two others (Jonny and Braidon) decided to hire bikes for the day. We cycled from La Serena to Coquimbo. Google maps claims this was only 5km (straightest route), however, we are all positive it was about 25km. Our route took us through heavy traffic at the beginning. This was very scary as I have not ridden on roads in about 15 years (Mummy, I did wear a helmet). Then we had a pleasant 5km ride...

May 9, 2011 - Stargazing

Last night was spectacular. We all travelled to Mamalluca Observatory, about an hour away from La Serena. There we spent three hours looking at the stars and planets through a series of telescopes. The astronomer who took us around was excellent and gave us a very good and complex lecture on constellations, dark matter, the universe etc. I got to view the Moon and Saturn through scientific telescopes and I even got to see the Southern Cross, a constellation only visible from the Southern Hemisphere. At the end, she showed us this...
