Feb 8, 2016 - 6th - 8th February

6th February Went to CocoCabana beach. Well you have to if you're here don't you? We didn't know it was a Blocco there today. There must've been 100,000 people, most of whom look like they're at a hen or stag party. I thought that when you dress up carnival it was in feathers and stuff, not nurses outfits. The beach, amazing but filled with bodies most of which are FAT! We've all seen the pics of beautiful Brazilian men and women...well they're fake. Of course, there are a few gorgeous men and women, but the majority are huge. And a huge...

Feb 5, 2016 - 3rd - 5th February

3rd February Got up thinking the ferry to Paranagua was 9:30am...there's only 3 a day so as it was another wet dull day thought we'd get the early one. Rushed breakfast and grabbed our bags and went to the ferry for 9:15.....it went at 7am not 7:30. We'd we get that time from? Anyway, got the 9:30 to Pontal do Sul. That was ok. Got a taxi to the terminal and caught the direct bus to Curitiba. It took 2 hrs and quite a nice journey. Taxi from the bus station to hotel Nikko again. Checked in, then went out in search of coffee and a snack....

Jan 12, 2016 - Arrived in Rio....

10th January 2016 Arrived at hotel, Casa Tuxi. It's a bit dark outside in the street and quiet but that's ok. The room is pretty basic. Probably more basic than we'd expected but it's only 4 nights and we didn't pay a lot for it so it's ok. There's aircon and a hot shower. The beds very hard but again, it's ok. It's clean. Why don't the rooms look similar to a website when you book? Monday, 11th January 2016 Our plan today was just to get acclimatised and get our bearings so we walked.....and walked and walked. Found a couple of shopping...

Jul 11, 2015 - Hello Rio and Christ the Redeemer!

I arrived in Rio in 4.40am, having slept for only 45 minutes as the turbulence was so bad. Seatbelt sign didn't come off for whole flight. When I arrived in Rio, it took just 15 minutes before I found my transfer guy with a lovely sign just for me. The guy was so nice and chatted to me all the way, pointing out what's safe/what's not, the slums and the lit up Christ the Redeemer! I can't believe I can see it! After half hour I arrived at the hostel, I wasn't allowed to check-in as it was so early. I decided to have 8 cups of coffee, a quick...

Feb 28, 2015 - Buenos Aires, Argentina to home - Day 15

Day 15 – On our way home – February 28, 2015 Today is our day for traveling home. Mom says that she wishes she was already passed this part of our trip - 24 hours later – so we don’t have to go through the travel adventures – but that is not really possible. We had room service for breakfast – which we could because we were in a suite. We watched the activity from our balcony – because the port does not “sleep” and we knew people would be leaving starting at 6:30AM. We had packed the night before and put all our major luggage outside of our...

Oct 5, 2014 - Insects

Insects We encountered insects wherever we went. They ranged from gorgeous and quite numerous butterflies to small insects that we rarely if ever saw. We were frequently warned about chiggers and ticks. We encountered only a few mosquitos, but lots of gnats. Wherever we walked…in the jungle, in the Pantanal, in the Atlantic Rainforest, and Iguassu Falls…we wore our pant legs tucked into our socks. A great fashion statement. In spite of using bug repellent, tucking our pants and doing lots of swatting, we all acquired a variety of insect...

Oct 5, 2014 - A final day touring Rio

One Final Day in Rio Today was election day in Brazil and voting there is mandatory. Eugenio picked us up at noon after his voting was done. By then both couples had taken walks along Copacabana Beach and packed for our evening flight homeward. We visited Sugarloaf Mountain, which is a granite rock peninsula with a cable car to the top. As with yesterday’s touring, Rio is in such a beautiful setting that it is impossible to go wrong hitting any tourist location with any sort of view. Sugarloaf, at approximately 1200 feet elevation had more...

Oct 4, 2014 - Rio from Christ the Redeemer, Sambadrome, to the Botanical Gardens

Rio from Christ the Redeemer, Sambadrome, to the Botanical Gardens After an outstanding breakfast buffet, we headed out early with Eugenio. The first stop was the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. After a drive through the Tijuca Forest, a van ride to the top parking area, and a walk up 211 steps, we finally arrived at the base of the gigantic concrete statue of Christ which is covered with tens of thousands of pieces of stone. Erected in1931, it is an amazing sight. Luckily, the crowds were remarkably small, and when the clouds cleared...

Oct 3, 2014 - Getting Soaked Again, on the Brazil Side

Getting Soaked Again, on the Brazil Side Today was another day to switch to our final base for this long, but in many ways too short, visit to Brazil. The scheduled afternoon flight back to Rio (this time to visit for a 2-day stay) allowed us to do the "Morning Walk" from the activity menu of Iguassu Experience. Our guide was Edso and with him we found a few birds and a couple monkeys on the paths around the Brazilian falls viewpoints, but he earned his tip by providing cheap pullover raincoats. As we did yesterday on the Argentine side, we...

Sep 29, 2014 - The Day of the Tanagers

The Day of the Tanagers Today was back to the hard work of finding birds in the dense foliage of the Atlantic Rain Forest and our last full day of birding with Andy. The routes were labeled Portao Azulejo and the Theodoro Trail. One was a walk on a private farm and forest road, the other a walk on an abandoned railroad bed that was converted to a road which was also abandoned. This last trail is narrow and nearly completely overgrown, with patches of asphalt and the gentle grade being the only reminders of the history of this route. We...

Sep 28, 2014 - A More Relaxed Pace

A More Relaxed Pace Today we explored the trails here a Serra Dos Tucanos Lodge with Andy, the owner and guide. As with all the forest birding on this trip, it was tough to see the birds we heard, especially tough to get all six of our tour group on a bird high above. We did have a real treat early on this walk, Blue Manakins Lekking. Two males would get on the same branch, and while calling, alternately jump up in the air. For a time they seemed to purposely jump over each other in kind of a continuos leap frog game. We spent about 4 hours...

Sep 27, 2014 - The Day of Long-tailed Birds

The Day of Long-tailed Birds Today's adventure took us north and east then west to the much drier western slopes of the mountain range. We went as far north as a town called Sumiduoro. The vegetation was more sparse, so easier to see any birds that were found. We had wonderful looks at many birds today that were new for the trip. Some highlights were: Three-toed Jacamar, Streamer-tailed Tyrant, Firewood Gatherer, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, and White-eared Puffbird. Besides the Streamer-tailed Tyrant, other long tailed birds were Squirrel...
