with another driver I went up to the sleepy village of Samaipata (elevation 1650m) in the foothills of the Cordillera Oriental, a pleasant place to hole up for a few days. The Quechua name, meaning "rest in the highlands", could hardly be more appropriate. The region's main attraction is the pre-Inca ceremonial site of El Fuerte (since 1998 a Unesco World Heritage site) and the Parque Nacional Amboro.
