Potosi is a town which seems to exist solely to exploit the enormous mineral wealth of the Cerro Rico. This great mountain looms over the city like an old and hoary god his exploitation continuing for nearly four hundred and fifty years. At one time in the 18th century, exploitation of the mountains mineral wealth made Potosi one of the richest and most populous cities in the world. Potosi's fortunes have declined and recovered in line with world mineral prices. Now there are an estimated 250,000 residents of which 15,000 work in the mines...
