We took the public bus with all our equipment and plenty of food to Sorata, a crumbling colonial gem, perched on a hillside in a valley beneath the towering snowcapped peaks of Illampu (6362 m) and Ancohuma (6427 m) in de Cordillera Real, Bolivia's most prominent range, is also one of the loftiest and most imposing in the Andes.
