Jun 23, 2019 - Füssen to Jerzens

Stage 11 Füssen to Jerzens via the Hahntennjoch Bruce here. I’m going to try and do justice to the daily report. The morning started the way I have been dreading, rain on the tent at 5 when I woke. I have not been looking forward to packing up in the rain with wet tents and half dry washing from the day before. Fortunately, by get up time at 6, the rain had stopped and although things were damp, we could have breakfast and pack up in dry conditions. We retraced our steps of yesterday, back past the castles at Fussen then through typical...

Jun 20, 2019 - Innsbruck - rest day'

Rest day in Innsbruck Last night it rained, heavily I am told with some thunder and lightning but I was not aware. Most unusual!, This morning however, at 6am, a series of cannon shots or explosions rent the air followed by the church bells all going berserk. This definitely did get my attention although I had been half dozing since about 3am. We guessed that all this has something to do with the Corpus Christi holiday as it was all repeated again at 7am and then again at 8am. At first I thought that someone was doing avalanche blasting but...

Jun 19, 2019 - Mittersill to Innsbruck

Mittersill to Volders (about 15km from Innsbruck) Our hotel last night was delightful in all but two aspects. Firstly they ran out of hot water in the evening and secondly the bed was strangely uncomfortable. I actually compared it unfavourably to my sleeping mat. The room itself was lovely, the facilities were otherwise great and the meals were great. When I woke I felt better, though still tender in the tum, so I decided to risk riding and carry a toilet roll in case. After a day and a half with limited food I felt a bit lacking in energy...

Jun 8, 2019 - Day 25 - Lienz

Day 25 - Saturday 8 June 19 - Lienz Breakfast in the hotel and we were away at 0945 hrs to drive the 38 kms to Heiligenbut. The road was winding and rose from the valley floor to the village which sits quite high in the mountains. The sun was shining and the views of the steep sided mountains were spectacular to say the least. We stopped on one occasion to view paddocks of green long grasses being mowed and bailed leaving patterns of domestic cut lawns, dotted with randomly placed green plastic coated bales . Waterfalls were plentiful...

Jun 7, 2019 - Day 24 - Lienz from Italy

Day 24 - Friday 7 June 19 We departed Treviso at 0840 hrs with a positive impression of the old town and the many different people we had come in contact. Our accomodation had been comfortable and dining experiences enjoyable. The highlights of the city and many of the not so prominent attractions had our attention for the four days. The 43 km drive to Castelbrando was initially through the built up suburbs of Treviso and other smaller villages before reaching the mountain slopes and an area of vineyards that led to the Castel with it’s...

Day 11 - Saturday 25 May 19 - Innsbruck It was an early rise to have breakfast and to be at the Hauptbahnhof by 0830 hrs for the shuttle bus to the Swarovski display 19 km’s from city centre. This visit was covered by the Innsbruck card as was the shuttle and started with a walk through of the “Chambers of Wonders”. The “Crystal Dome”, an artists presentation of what...

May 24, 2019 - Day 10 - Innsbruck

Day 10 - Friday 24 May 19 - Innsbruck After a solid nights sleep and breakfast in the hotel, we were at the Sightseeing pickup point in front of our hotel at 1000hrs for our “Hop on Hop on again “ tour. Our plan for the trip did not last long and it was not until we reached Schloss Ambras that we decided to visit. We had purchased the two day Innsbruck card which covered the cost of the HOHO and entry to the Schloss; the card was to prove a good buy. Ambras was of real interest primarily because of the paintings of the Habsburg descendants...

May 23, 2019 - Austrian Lakes and Innsbruck

Hello from Innsbruck, On Wednesday we had a tour of the lakes, villages and mountains of the Salzkammergut region of Austria. We had to imagine how beautiful it must be when the sun is shining because unfortunately it rained all day. Our first stop was St. Wolfgang. It is situated on the northern shore of Wolfgangsee Lake at the foot of the Schafberg Mountain. One of the popular attractions is the steepest cog railway in Austria. However, due to the weather we decided to skip the train ride. A few people went but they said it was like a...

May 23, 2019 - Day 9 - Innsbruck from Switzerland

Day 9 - Thursday 23 May 19 - Innsbruck We awoke to a bright sunny day, packed our bags and were away by 0845 hrs for the 230km drive to Innsbruck. Initially we drove the south bank of the lake, first stopping at Kesswil for a coffee and a bun. The highlight of the drive was the old town centre of Rorschach which sits on the edge of the lake and has a number of aged buildings on the water with many others beautifully decorated. Passage through the town was narrow and slow. After a false side trip to a tourist site that was caused by my poor...

Mar 20, 2019 - More snowboarding — in Austria!

I was heading to Kitzbühl, Austria where I was meeting my friend Leopold. Him and his friend Tommy picked me up from the train station and took me to Leopold’s place which is this little, old bnb that his grandmother bought in the early 30s. And during the Nazi occupation in Vienna, she took people and had them stay with her. It was absolutely adorable and reminded me a lot of the cottage. We dropped my stuff off and Leopold and his friend Tommy took me to this little restaurant in town. All of the buildings have lights on the roofs and I...

Sep 30, 2018 - Ried im Oberinntal

The final drive from the Italian-Austrian border crossing was a breeze but we were glad to arrive at our hotel in Ried im Oberinntal. Great staff, good food and excellent wine, we were very happy. With very little to explore in that quaint village we headed off to Germany for our next overnighter at Friedrichshafen near Upper Lake Constance. Temperatures down to 10C encouraged us to have the car heater on when we got underway but clear, sunny skies and light traffic made the drive easy. Unfortunately the scenery was a little less...

Jun 12, 2018 - Lake walk and then Kufstein

After two long days we decided on a quieter day by visiting one of the small lakes not far from Kitzbühel. The weather was lovely in the morning but due to rain in the afternoon. Hintersteiner See was a lovely little lake and there was a trail around the lake. The lake was aquamarine in places. There were some strange looking cows in the pastureland near the lake. We arrived back at the car just as starting spitting with rain- so timed it just right. We then decided to head to the main town of Kufstein to visit the castle above the town....
