May 23, 2019 - Austrian Lakes and Innsbruck

Hello from Innsbruck, On Wednesday we had a tour of the lakes, villages and mountains of the Salzkammergut region of Austria. We had to imagine how beautiful it must be when the sun is shining because unfortunately it rained all day. Our first stop was St. Wolfgang. It is situated on the northern shore of Wolfgangsee Lake at the foot of the Schafberg Mountain. One of the popular attractions is the steepest cog railway in Austria. However, due to the weather we decided to skip the train ride. A few people went but they said it was like a...

Mar 20, 2019 - More snowboarding — in Austria!

I was heading to Kitzbühl, Austria where I was meeting my friend Leopold. Him and his friend Tommy picked me up from the train station and took me to Leopold’s place which is this little, old bnb that his grandmother bought in the early 30s. And during the Nazi occupation in Vienna, she took people and had them stay with her. It was absolutely adorable and reminded me a lot of the cottage. We dropped my stuff off and Leopold and his friend Tommy took me to this little restaurant in town. All of the buildings have lights on the roofs and I...

Sep 30, 2018 - Ried im Oberinntal

The final drive from the Italian-Austrian border crossing was a breeze but we were glad to arrive at our hotel in Ried im Oberinntal. Great staff, good food and excellent wine, we were very happy. With very little to explore in that quaint village we headed off to Germany for our next overnighter at Friedrichshafen near Upper Lake Constance. Temperatures down to 10C encouraged us to have the car heater on when we got underway but clear, sunny skies and light traffic made the drive easy. Unfortunately the scenery was a little less...

Jun 12, 2018 - Lake walk and then Kufstein

After two long days we decided on a quieter day by visiting one of the small lakes not far from Kitzbühel. The weather was lovely in the morning but due to rain in the afternoon. Hintersteiner See was a lovely little lake and there was a trail around the lake. The lake was aquamarine in places. There were some strange looking cows in the pastureland near the lake. We arrived back at the car just as starting spitting with rain- so timed it just right. We then decided to head to the main town of Kufstein to visit the castle above the town....

Jun 6, 2018 - Up the Hahnenkammbahn and the Four lakes hiking trail to the Pengelstein

Today we went up the Hahnenkammbahn one of the two cable cars in Kitzbühel. Our walk started on the panorama trail but the signage was not very good. There was extensive ski infrastructure all over the mountain top. The panoramas were excellent and the paths good. However the lakes were a bit disappointing. It was a good walk. After descending via the cable car we realised there was a vintage car rally just assembling sponsored Bentley. There were some really nice cars!

Our campground was near the Schwarzsee lake so are day of exploring Kitzbühel started at the lake. From there we took the path to Kitzbühel entering the town by the Pfarrkirche St Andreas and the Liebfrauenkirche with its elaborate frescoed interior. We had stayed in Kitzbühel in 2003 and it had changed very little except go much more upmarket. After exploring the town and visiting the tourist information office we then walked back on the western side of the lake back to the campground.

Jun 4, 2018 - Kitzbühel

Today we left Seefeld and headed to Kitzbühel. Rather than go down the long 16% incline down to the Inn Valley we decided we would take the longer route through Germany and re-entering Austria near Salzburg and then head west. This route worked fine and we arrived at the campground safely. Although not the best campground and expensive, it was easy in and we had a good pitch which was easy to get in and out of.

Jun 2, 2018 - The Kaunertal Glacier Road

The garage on the Friday had discovered a sensor which was had failed causing a problem with the cooling fan but could find no other faults. We decided to test the car by driving the Kaunertaler Gletscherpanoramastraße or the Kaunertal Glacier Road, from 1273m to 2750m. The road took you through all the vegetation zones of the Alps and had mountain landscapes that have been shaped over millions of years by glacial ice. It was a stunning road with plenty of hairpin bends. There was a number of information/stopping points along the...

May 30, 2018 - Innsbruck

We returned to the SEAT garage in Innsbruck but they said they could not do anything about the car until at the earliest the following week. We then rang the small garage in Seefeld we had first visited and they said they could have a look on Friday morning. As we were in Innsbruck we decided to re-visit. The last time we had been visited Innsbruck was in 2003. We enjoyed exploring this lovely city once again. The famous landmarks are the Golden roof, the Olympic Ski jump plus the lovely old town.

May 29, 2018 - Exploring the Wild waters of the Ötztaler Ache in contrast to the still waters of Piburger See.

We had a problem with our car which had to be sorted out on the Monday which resulted us visiting two garages. It had lost coolant and was sounding rough. To try the car out we decided we would drive back into the Ötztaler Valley. From the town of Oetz we walked along the crashing waters of the Ötztaler Ache (river) to Wellerbrüke. Here on bridge which is one of the 40+ bridges over the Ache, we stood and watched the river which crashed over rocks. This was a serious whitewater rafting river. The noise was deafening. Crossing the bridge,...
