Dec 29, 2017 - Puffing Billy

Early start under the overcast skies as we headed back into town - spent some time in Dymocks bookstore before walking down to Federation Square and Flinders Street Railway Station. 70min train ride out to Belgrave. Here we caught the Puffing Billy historic train to Lakeside. It was packed. Lovely ride with a couple of stops along the way. Arrived at Lakeside (near Emerald). We had lunch here and then went and had a look at a huge model railway display - it was over 30 years old. We then went down to the lakes for the boys to hire an...

Dec 28, 2017 - At the 'G'

Early start in overcast skies to head to city to go to the Ashes Test at the MCG. It was only a 10 min walk from the city centre to get to the grounds - didn't look like many people were going our way. How wrong we were on our way home at the end - 63 000 people at the game. We watched the first session and then went to the Sports Museum (on the other side of the grounds) at lunch where we spent a good hour and a half looking at lots of really intersting sporting memorabilia. The walk around was crazy - so many people. Back to our seats to...

Dec 27, 2017 - The Big Screen and more

Today the wind is blowing madly as we set out early to the city. Dropped off at Swanston Street and walked up to the Bourke St Mall where Keagan purchased a set of sunnies and Mum finally traded in her broken bag and purse. Further walk up to meet the old vintage City Loop Tram to the Melbourne Museum and IMAX Theatre. The Exhibition Centre next door was an impressive building!! We spent 2.5 hours watching the latest Star Wars Movie in 3D on the 3rd largest screen in the world.....Wow! Walked back for some lunch in the Mall before heading...

Dec 26, 2017 - Luna Park

24 hours in weather is a long time in Melbourne. We set off on a cool but sunny walk for about 15 minutes to catch the #11 Tram into town. We had our cards to touch on and off the trams. It took about 30 minutes into town where we could see stacks of people walking over to the MCG for the test match. We then changed to #96 Tram to St Kilda and it was standing room only- thank goodness most got of at the Casino stop. We arrived early so had a look at the famous St Kilda beach before grabbing something to eat at McDonalds across from Luna...

Dec 24, 2017 - Kryal Castle and across to Melbourne

Another cool day as we set off to look at the imposing Arch of Victory and its 22 km of trees planted to honour the fallen. It was next door to a large lake in the town which houses the rowing for the 1956 Olympic Games. Lovely parks surrounding the lake. We then headed out of town towards Melbourne to Kryal Castle - a 1970's medieval 'theme park' on the edge of town. Had a lovely day there looking at the torture chamber, knights and horses. The boys enjoyed the archery and 'hitting each other over the head'! Mum and Dad gave up on the maze...

Dec 22, 2017 - The Surprise

As everybody knows, apart from Leigh, I had arranged for Paul, Alex, Phoebe, Rachel and Harry to join us in Australia for Christmas. Wade and Patsy went to fetch them from the airport pretending to go and pick up some arrivals for Keli's travel company. Leigh and I stayed at home. Whilst I watched my phone for updates on their arrival Leigh was planning for an early night - no chance! They all arrived safe and sound at about 2200hrs. The kids all got together in one of the rooms and we called Leigh in - I think she went into shock when she...

Dec 7, 2017 - Day 11 - Melbourne

Rest day. Went to change the rear tire early in the morning to the place I found on internet, where have ordered one Metzler Enduro 2. Had to drive 40 minutes through the infinitely spread Melbourne suburbs. Once more appreciating living in Perth: within 20 minutes would have reached any place! Back in the hotel we check out and left all luggages at the reception and we went on top of the Eureka tower, to enjoy the view of Melbourne from the highest building. Then we had a walk on the South Bank and a quick snack. Back in the hotel we...

Dec 6, 2017 - Day 10 - Tallangatta to Melbourne

Curves, curves and more curves. Finally sunshine at wake up and so we left quickly not to waste such beauty, missed badly in the last days. We left Tallangatta and it’s beautiful lake, following a nice green valley full of paddocks and farm. The air was really fresh and despite the layers underneath the jacket, was still feeling the cold touch. We reached Mount Beauty to refill and we stop for some warm cappuccino to help warming up; by then was 14 degrees. I planned to go through Falls Creek and down to Omeo, but engaged n the...

Nov 17, 2017 - Melbourne

Melbourne has been rated “the world’s most livable city”. It is a busy city of 3.5 million people most of whom seemed to be downtown while we were there exploring the city. We had a guided tour with a Melbourne greeter. This is a free service offered by the city. The city is another example of mixing the old heritage buildings with modern glass and steel architecture. We started in Federation Square which is a “new area” of steel fronted buildings right in the center of the city which was created by covering a huge area of train tracks. It...

Oct 27, 2017 - Off to China

After a sleepless night, we boarded China Southern Airlines heading to Shenzhen, our first stop on China soil. Had about 4 hours there, sitting in an open area under 'guard', before we were walked through to then board the internal flight to Beijing. We arrived about 11.45pm, and the group gathered with Amy and Lily, our Guides. Went to the bus, then had to sit and wait for the Sydney flight to arrive with the rest of our Group. Finally made it to the Hotel about 2am. Dee and Ella have a beautiful Suite, we have what Pete refers to as the...
