Sep 11, 2014 - Winton

It was sad to leave Richmond, and that gorgeous Murphy! From Richmond we headed south to Winton - the road was sealed for part of the way and then dirt, but it saved us from going back to Hughenden and down from there. It was a bit hard going, nowhere to stop, red dust and hot. Fortunately we got there in time to go to the Winton Dinosaur museum tour. The building is out of town about 15km up on a hill which had great views. Part of the tour took us through how they extracted the fossils from a dig and how they worked on them. We had seen...

Aug 5, 2014 - Winton

We bought some Shoo Roos before leaving Longreach to stick on the bumper bar and hopefully deter kangaroos from jumping in front of us. We used them on our last trip and thought they worked, so here's hoping. Our next stop was a free camp next to the highway, we picked a spot next to a shelter shed in which swallows had build massive mud nests. They looked rather impressive. Pete had the fire going so was a happy camper and I got Pete to donate his Viagra clock to the shelter shed so I was a happy camper. We are now in dinosaur country and...

Jun 19, 2014 - Winton, Queensland

Originally, the name of this town was Pelican Waterhole. However, stamps in those days were cancelled by the postmaster handwriting the name of the town across it. The first postmaster for Pelican Waterhole soon tired of that process, so with official permission, he changed the name to Winton after a town in England. One last word about QANTAS: As stated in our last post, they began initially in Winton, about 182 km (113 miles) from Longreach. On the outskirts of Winton, there is a monument with a commemorative plaque telling that: On 23rd...

Aug 22, 2013 - A Very Pleasant Stay

23rd August We have enjoyed our stay but the time has come to move on. Tomorrow we will be on the road again heading towards Barcaldine. Our stay at the park has been excellent, entertainment every night from The Two Short Sheilas in Banjo's barn. Susie is doing the show by herself at the moment while Mel is in Scotland organising their tour. They have been invited to attend the Edinburah Fringe Festival. Every show has been different with guest artists. While driving around town we came across the Musical Fence. In 2003 local and...

Aug 20, 2013 - Next stop - Winton

19th August Today has been a hot, dry and windy drive. The cattle and sheep we are seeing in the paddocks look to be in very poor condition, appears to be no feed for them. Along the way we had a fuel stop at Kynuna. The nosey Brolga put a smile on our faces, not sure if he was hoping for breakfast. He didn't appear to be worried about customers going in and out the door. Arriving in Winton we are staying at the Matilda Caravan Park. Lucky us we have been put in a nice shady area. There is entertainment and roast on every night. Mel and...

Jul 27, 2013 - Day 29 UPDATE NOTES

Hi All, Heading south we started more relaxing and slightly less touring having 2 nights on the coast and we mean the waters edge at Rollngstone about 50ks north of Townsville. That gave us a day and a half to relax and unwind. Then off to Charters Towers on the way meeting up with friends Trev and Ros and starting inland towards the outback. Charters Towers is an old gold mining town and we did an interesting tour via a Tourist Information CD that was basically a talking guide CD, turned on and off as indicated and it told the local story...

Aug 2, 2012 - Still at Winton

Hi, Thought I should drop in and let you know we are ok. We are still at Winton - have been here for just over a week and cannot see us leaving for ages yet. Last night was our 13th night without power or water connected - we cannot see ourselves staying in many caravan parks from now on, as we are loving the freedom and peace and quiet - never mind the financial saving (especially after the cost of fuel and caravan parks on the way to and in Northern Territory)! We are loving our spot by the waterhole, under a magnificent gum tree. The...

Jul 29, 2012 - Longreach 30/07/12

Before we left Barcaldine yesterday morning, we called into the local museum. Tom Leckie was there, still entertaining people with his stories and jokes. He recognised us and came over to say hi, and then proceeded to tell everyone how the bus load he had the day before (of which we were a part of) entertained him all day. Don't know how, 'cause it's hard to get a word in edgewise with Tom. Going back to the aboriginal rock carvings, Tom has taken people from all over the world out to study them. He showed us one particular carving that was...

Jul 26, 2012 - Mount Isa to Winton

Before leaving Mt Isa we drove around hunting for a little fan heater as the last few nights have been way to chilly! Unfortunately we had no luck - the locals said it was the wrong time of the year for heaters - even though its been the coldest winter in years..... We stopped by Woolies to top up on grocerys and then supercheap for some oil and off on the road again. The drive was really nice and went quickly. We called through Cloncurry - a nice country town and home to the RFDS and also Australias hottest temperature on record. Our...

Jul 26, 2012 - We Moved!

Hi, Well not much to report this time. We did struggle to leave our gorgeous, riverside spot at Boulia. We wound down well and truly and enjoyed an assortment of neighbours (except for the ones that parked so close to us that they ran over our fire and we could not get out if we had needed to - idiots - and that is not what Barry called them!!!). The last couple (Ros and Malcolm) were really interesting and we have swapped addresses and we have been invited to visit them if we go to the Lockyer Valley and they want to come to Tasmania for...

Jun 7, 2012 - Blackall to Winton

Blackall to Winton 30th May - 6th June At last we have access to the internet again, had some problems with the Modem but had it fixed in Longreach. After leaving Blackall, a very friendly town, we drove to Barcaldine, had a quick look around and then went East 85 Km to Jericho as we had been told about a good camping spot, and it was a lovely spot right on the lake with good amenities. There were about 30 campers enjoying the area, so this small town attracts visitors who spend money in the town. Jericho also has the smallest drive in...

Jazzabout Trip 2012

Nov 1, 2011 - Winton - Nov 1

We arrived home from Longreach, about 4.30 and had just sat down to our coffee when the biggest storm we have seen for YEARS, just landed right on top of us! We were out attempting to get our awning down, as it was in real danger of ripping off the van - of course, the arms were bending in the gale, and everything jammed - we were absolutely drenched, with Pete screaming abuse at the wind, rain, thunder and lightning!! Our chairs, buckets and everything else loose in the park, all ended up down in the very bottom corner jammed against the...
