Got fed up driving and stopped at South Mission Beach for the night. Great little campsite close to the beach with it's own 'stinger net' - don't go in the sea without one - full of killer jelly fish and crocs! That explains the miles and miles of empty beaches. Not much to report really. Had a nice walk along the beach dipping the occasional toe in the water (very brave). Very hot evening so Bonnie's air conditioning went on for the first time - until Leigh moaned! As we have had a good travel day we should be able to make it to Port...

Feb 28, 2009 - A day trip to the rainforest... and on to South Mission Beach

Saturday February 28 Today we were up real early as we had to be at the Freshwater Train Station at 8:30 to catch the Kuranda Scenic Railway train up to the town of Kuranda. The train starts in Cairns, but it was easier for us to pick it up at Freshwater Station. The route travels up through the tropical rain forest via the Barron River valley and falls. It is quite the feat of engineering, passing over tressles, through tunnels and round incredible curves to reach the head of the vally. It took over an hour and a half with one stop for ten...
