Mar 30, 2018 - Notes from the Reef

Lady Elliot Island is owned by the Commonwealth of Australia. The resort leases the island. Thousands of birds including frigate birds, white capped noddies, seagulls, and mutton birds. Poo galore. Expect to get pooed. We did. Mutton birds nest underground. A family of them live under our cabin. At night, the young cry to be fed with a wailing cat/baby like cry that is startling at first, irritating after 15 minutes. Our first night, they cried all night. Mo threatened to leave on the next flight. Earplugs and sleep aids came to the...

Mar 27, 2018 - Great Barrier Reef

We are on Lady Elliot Island, 30 minutes by air from the mainland. See www.ladyelliotisland.com.au for details. Our highlights have been spotting manta rays from the comfort of a glass bottom boat; seeing turtles while snorkeling from the security of the glass bottom boat; getting a private wading tour of the tidal lagoon; and spotting a hatchling loggerhead turtle making its solitary way to the night sea. On the other hand, I am intimidated by rough seas, tides, currents, and sea creatures. When we set off to do a self-guided snorkeling...

Mar 24, 2018 - Road trip

We have traveled north from Newcastle in a car owned and operated by our Australian friends Carol and Allan. We met them in India when we were touring there two years ago. They generously invited us to travel with them in Australia. We are of course very grateful for the opportunity. We have been able to visit O'Reilly's retreat in the Great Dividing Range, where we had colorful local birds tapping on our windows; the showcase Crocoseum of the Australia Zoo, founded by the "Crocodile Hunter" the late Steve Irwin; Glass House and other...

Aug 16, 2016 - Hervey Bay - shopping for van bits, visit John

Tuesday 16th Aug - caravan parts - mower check - visit John - Sequence 3-7 BvG Today is the boy’s turn for shopping right after David and Ron then went off to pick up the new towing mirrors for the Prados. David also got a new jockey wheel. From the shops we went to Anna’s to check out if her mower is worth keeping. It is, and David got it started no problem and then left to get a couple of bolts for the van. After he left there was no way I could get that mower started again - grrrrr - so the grass didn’t get mown. Anna is going to pick up...

Aug 15, 2016 - Hervey Bay - shopping and pub dinner at night

Monday 15th Aug - shopping and pub dinner at night Today has been quiet. Jan n Ron did a bit of shopping for a a few groceries, and then after morning tea Jan and Heather went off to find a craft shop. They were supposed to bring back pies for lunch. Well, when they ring up at 2:00pm to say “Are you still waiting for your pie?” - what do you think the answer was? David and Ron decided enough was enough so we went and made a sandwich about 1:30 - - so the pies never eventuated. It’s all a conspiracy. It’s the new way of trying to get David...

Aug 14, 2016 - Hervey Bay - yet another quiet day

Sunday 14th Aug - yet another quiet day Good thing we had all that excitement early last week or there would be nothing to rave about. We are all in wind down mode so we skipped church this morning. The day has been quite windy and much of the day has had extensive cloud cover - even a quick shower about 5:30pm. We’re still getting our walks in each day, usually one in morning and then again in the afternoon, but they’re not power-walks by any stretch of the imagination. We’re enjoying the relaxed mode and today have done a lot of reading....

Aug 13, 2016 - Hervey Bay - another quiet day

Saturday 13th Aug - quiet day and shop browsing Today we took the time to visit our old neighbours from Violet St days. [You’re right - the neighbours aren’t old, it’s the relationship that goes back 30 years]. First off we had morning tea with Anna, and then went to visit husband John who is in a care facility. This afternoon we went shopping - well actually that should read “looking” because we didn’t buy much. Much to the consternation of David and Ron the girls spent sooooo loooong in the last store that the much-mentioned “we’ll go for...

Aug 12, 2016 - Hervey Bay - Quiet 'normal' day

Friday 12th Aug - a quiet 'normal' day at last Reading the previous blogs, you could be excused for thinking that Ron is making up issues to give him something to write about! Ah well! It’s been an interesting week so far. The day has been spent quietly sitting around. Reading, Stitching, shopping for a few groceries - and that’s about it really - a fairly full, taxing, demanding day in the life of 4 retirees. Oh yes - Ron and David also drove out to see if the local caravan shop had a specific brand of towing mirrors. During the day David...

Aug 11, 2016 - Hervey Bay - Expect the unexpected

Thursday 11th Aug - Hervey Bay - Expect the unexpected David n Heather wake at a reasonable time and go for a walk before breakfast while Ron n Jan sleep in and get up at 8:30 for cuppa, brekkie and then a walk. So just before we started out for our walk, we stopped off at Mick and Michelle’s to say thanks again for the yummy fish. Ron got talking with Mick as he was winding up the legs to lift the “slide-on” camper ready for travel. He was about half way through the process of elevating it a metre and a half off the ground to back the...

Aug 10, 2016 - Depart - A/Hills to Hervey Bay

Wednesday 10th Aug - DEPART - Arana Hills to Hervey Bay We made it. Ready for the day. Got away 10:30 and linked up with David and Heather at Bald Hills. Gympie ‘duck ponds’ (Lake Alford Park) at 12:30 so we could share lunch with the ducks, ibis, geese, water hen and swans. Couldn’t say we lack for company. Ron’s found that his knee has a limit of about 1 and half hours before it starts to send signals like - 'are we there yet', ‘can we stop now’, ‘when’s morning tea’, 'don't you need to stop to go to the loo', 'can I have a bit of...

Oct 23, 2015 - Hervey Bay

FRIDAY 23rd October “How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. October is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has ‘flewn’. How DID it get so late so soon?” (with thanks to Dr Seuss and our HEAL Africa friends David and Heather for bringing it to our attention) Yep!!! It is getting late. Almost time to roll the caravans to home. It started off as a very hot morning, so we were looking forward to the afternoon high tide when we could take a dip. Hazel went off with Ron to buy a 'fashion statement' to...

Oct 22, 2015 - Hervey Bay - visit Maryborough

THURSDAY 22nd October Today we go to see Mary Heritage (a lovely lady) at Mary-borough, the city which has a lifesize bronze statue of Mary Poppins. On arrival in Maryborough we checked out the Markets. Which were in a different location to what we remembered. Found out that they had been relocated while a major streetscape reconstruction was under way, and today was their last day in this temporary location. Tonight will be a Street-scape Party to celebrate the completion of the project. They will have live music, street stalls, adjacent...
