Nov 7, 2007 - Fraser Island

We made it to Hervey Bay just in time to catch the Melbourne Cup at the local watering hole. For those who don't know, the Melbourne Cup is their version of the Kentucky Derby...but the whole country stops for this race. I went to the Kentucky Derby last year, so it was interesting to see how horse racing fans differ here in Australia...they don't much! Lots of drinking and crazy hats...oh yeah, and lots of betting too. But that's not why we went to Hervey Bay...we were there to visit the famous Fraser Island. Unfortunately for us, it had...

Nov 1, 2007 - Fraser Island

I just got back from a 3 day self-drive 4WD 'safari' to Fraser Island. We lucked out with the weather and the group of people on the trip and we all had a wicked time. Highlights of the trip were Lake McKenzie (absolutely amazing!!), Indian Head, the Champange Pools and Lake Wabby. We also had a great time camping each night, and chasing off dingo's who were determined to try to steal our dinner. Our 4WD only broke down twice, we only got stuck in the sand 3 times, and we only had to dumpster dive once for oneof the girls purses that had...

Oct 9, 2007 - Fraser Island

After a brief introduction from our yellow toothed guide Merv, "...feeding the dingos is very uncool..." our van was packed and ready to go. At first we were a bit apprehenive about some of the people we got landed with (four of them were from Israel and seemed loud and only really spoke English when they wanted to ask us something) but there was eleven of us and everyone else seemed alright. It wasn't long until we were driving along Fraser beach with beer in hand. The first day we decided to go see Lake Mckenzie. We got stuck on the way....

Grand Day Out

Aug 8, 2007 - Fraser Island

Well I'm back in one piece. I've made it back to the main land and after the talk we had in the morning, prior to the trip, I wondered if we would make it back at all. Saturday afternoon everyone on the trip met each other officially as we had to be briefed on the trip ahead. The group consisted of 10 girls, including myself, and 1 bloke. At first I thought it would be nice as we could have a girly time and explore the island. But it didn't take long to realize that they are not the usual type of girls I would hang around with. Sunday...

Jul 17, 2007 - Fraser Island Queensland 23 June 2007.

Sylvia's comments. It started to rain as we were pulling on to the site and it continued all night, sleeping was not too easy with it battering down on the roof. We had also parked under a tree which was the possum's pathway down, so when it landed on top of our van I wondered what was happening. When the alarm went off at 5am I did not feel as if I had had much sleep. We went through the motions of getting some breakfast before heading out to the camp gate to wait for the pick up bus. We had been told by the campsite staff to ensure we...

I was up at 6:15 for a 6:30 check out and a 6:50 briefing in the Palace common room. I'd met some of the guys on my trip the night before after we'd gone on a "booze run" to one of the local bottle shops and they seemed like a good bunch of lads. The rest of the guys in the room I met that morning for the first time! My truck consisted of Floor, Dan, Will, Kenny, Romley, John, Kate Got aquainted with dvds about the island and driving etc Had to replace flat on one of the vehicles Drove to the van centre and loaded up with all our gear went...

Rich Goes Travelling

May 8, 2007 - Fraser Island

Next day we got off to a bit of a shaky start- got bogged in the sand within half hour of arriving on the island, then when we arrived at our 1st stop turned out we had a cracked radiator and had to wait for them to bring us another car from the mainland. All good after that though, we got to lake McKensie (where the sand is so fine you can polish your teeth & jewellery with-apparently!) after the crowds, so that was cool. 1st evening we had a wicked bbq, only annoying thing bout fraser is u have to go everywhere in twos coz of dingoes...

Sand. I hate it. Don't get me wrong, beaches are great fun, and I love lazing around on a beach as much as the next person. But Fraser Island has permanently turned me off sand. See, Fraser is the worlds largest sand island. Its huge, and made entirely out of the stuff. So while its stunningly beautiful (think crystal clear blue lakes perched beside white sand dunes, endless beacches and rainforests sprouting up out of the sand) its a massive pain in the arse. Let me explain. See, it gets EVERYWHERE. After three days of camping and 4 wheel...

Apr 23, 2007 - Whitsundays, Frazer, Ozi Zoo- weeks of fun!

Ok there is just faaaaarrrrrrr tooooooo much to write about, we have had such a good and such a crazy few weeks! After we met steve in Airlie the boys had a few mad nights out before we went to the whitsundays. Steve and I went on a different boat to french cause he wanted to do his diving stuff. We had what looked like an amazing boat and in fairness it was really nice the only problem was it was designed to hop over the water not go through the water smoothly. Guess who got sea sick!! NOT ME! WOO! lol. The first day on the boat Steve,...

Apr 7, 2007 - FRASER ISLAND - Australia

KARIN GOES FAR

Mar 28, 2007 - Up the East Coast

Marcia: OK so we've finally got our pictures up to date and you can all see where we've been and where we are now! The last few weeks have absolutely flown by and it's even difficult to remember everything! The things that have stood out though have been: Bondi Beach; stunning with man-made pools along the beaches and surfers everywhere! The beach itself is actually quite small, packed with the most gorgeous people you have ever seen...we chose to walk along the coast instead of suntanning that day! ha ha Not that Nige is one for...

Mar 24, 2007 - Fraser Island

We were lucky to get the last 2 places on the smaller 1 day trip to Fraser Island, it was a 16 seater bus, driven by Kirk, Captain Kirk he liked to call himself!! Kirk picked us up at 8am and drove us to the boat that would take us to Fraser Island and if we didn't know it was an Island made entirely of sand before, we certainly did by the time we got on the boat! Once at Fraser Island we got onto a little 16 seater 4x4 truck. Kirk took us to a place where we could walk through the rain forest, which was pretty amazing. Then we drove down...
