Oct 25, 2010 - Fraser Island

Arrived at Hervey Bay, the base from which our trip to Fraser Island was departing. Nice enough hostel, free welcome meal which is always good, whatever the quality, and then come 6.30 it was time to begin the Fraser process, with a safety meeting and being allocated our teams. The tour itself was going to be about 8 people to each vehicle, a big 4wheel drive which is the only way to get around the island which is completely made of sand. 4 cars in our trip so about 25 people in total. Gaz, Jordan and I were allocated into Team A, and were...

Sep 16, 2010 - north along Fraser

Sept 10th Delayed our departure to avoid towing the camper at high tide. Moved to Cathedral private campground for electricity re-charge and a washing machine. No phone access even with aerial. Spot not nearly as nice as our last two camps and surprised there was no dingo fence. So kids still having to be within direct eyesight and 10mts at all times. A dingo wandering around the campsite in the afternoon, but keeping to itself. Walked behind the campground up to Corrigan sand blow. We looked back behind at our footprints to see they were...

Sep 7, 2010 - Sandy Fraser

3rd September Packed and moving by 8.30 and drove to the ferry at River Heads. Somehow, Guy made it look easy reversing the camper and car down the boat ramp onto the ferry packed full of cars and trucks. 30min trip to Wanggoobla Creek landing at Fraser Island. Extremely low tide, started up the ramp in 2nd gear, oops then 1st gear....quickly to 2nd gear low range and just made it. It was STEEP and agricultural! Guy hoping we hadn't bitten off more than we can chew dragging the camper around! Spare wheel has been re-located to the roof and...

Sep 7, 2010 - 75 mile Eastern beach at Fraser

7th September Everything very wet either from humidity or rain, nothing drying, mould starting already! Packing up found a scorpion under the tent. Moved to a great spot we'd found on eastern beach at Gabala. Camping along the beach can be in any of the designated areas once you have a permit. No facilities. Hidden away behind the second low dune opened up onto a 25mt round grassy spot! Humidity gone! Set up and put everything out to dry. Even found tomatoes growing. Educating kids on dingo rules. Can't swim anywhere along the beach,...

Jun 20, 2010 - 3 Days Of Sand On Fraser Island

We arrived at our hostel Fraser's On Rainbow on Wednesday evening, made our beds in the dorm and dumped our stuff and went off to find some dinner. The hostel is quite good with a big bar/restaurant area with a kitchen backpackers can use, tv area for all the football and rugby on at the moment and more table tennis and pool tables. Although it feels more of a stop over place because the Oz Experience lot come here to sleep one night and prepare for their Fraser Island trip. The next morning we were all packed and checked out before 7am...

May 18, 2010 - Fraser Island

Fraser Island - the largest sand island in the world and of such significance that it is World Heritage listed. A few years ago on a previous visit to Queensland I had done a one-day tour of Fraser Island and had enjoyed it so much I had always wanted to return to see more of this beautiful island. So, we decided that now was a good time to take that opportunity. I researched all the options available from day trips, to staying in the resort, to hiring our own 4 x 4 vehicle and camping gear but in the end decided that the best option for us...

Apr 5, 2010 - Snakes, Scooters and Sand !

After a brief overnight stay in Rockhampton, I decided to head north to visit the Capricorn Caves. These are a series of dry caves that contain Rock Wallabies, Spiders and Micro-bats amongst other things. The caves consist of 14 chambers and the largest of these is called the Cathedral cave as it is used to hold weddings and classical concerts because of its almost perfect acoustics. Just when our guide was about to switch of the lights to show us how dark it was one of the group suddenly screamed 'SNAKE' as there was a 2m long Cobra snake...

Mar 26, 2010 - Fraiser Island Day2

Sailing trip cancelled this morning so had a lie in which was lovely.. Then went to pool for a swim and jacuzzi.. Very hot, couldn't stick the sun, had lunch and a beer as it was so hot!! Went back to room and had a sleep in the afternoon and woke up and what a laugh, I missed some parts of my knees with sun cream and they are burned and the rest still white, I will have to wear longer shorts tomorrow or Nuala will have some laugh... Then went for a walk around this huge complex and ended up on a lovely beach but again too hot and the knees...

Mar 25, 2010 - Fraiser Island Day 1

Got up early as was a tour of the island for the day. Went to coffee shop for coffee and a wrap to start the day off.. Met up with tour at 8.30, departed on a 4 wheel drive bus!!! Very bumpy roads, all dirt tracks no tarmac at all. First stop was Lake McKenzie at 9.00 for a swim, this is a rain water lake with poor white sand, spectalour, wait for photos, its amazing. The water in this lake is the best natural hair container and the sands fabulous for exfoliating so it was better than any spa treatment!!! Had tea and scones here along with...

Arrived in Brisbane, late yesterday evening, flight was delayed because of storms in Brisbane, so really guys I am getting all kinds of weather!!! Feb 19, 2010 - Fraser Island.. finally see some SUNshine Coast

Fraser is home to the purest Dingo breed because other 'normal' dogs can't interbreed as they can't get across to the island. There are signs everywhere about how to handle yourself. Big thing is to make yourself LOOK bigger than them i.e. no ducking down to take a photo.. A 9 year old boy was killed by one a few years back. All the campsites are surrounded by electric fences with warning signs everywhere so they take it very seriously. Gulp. Dingos don't bark so it's good to practice your growling too. Nonetheless I was so inspired by the...

Feb 18, 2010 - Fraser Island Fantasy

After breakfast we all trundled into the 4WD. We moved bumpily along the length of the beach visiting some of the main sights such as the massive Kirriar sandblow - very impressive. Also stopped to view the Red Canyon and Pinnacle formations along the beach. By mid afternoon the rain was coming down but we bravely fought our way to the top of Indian Head.. I had purchased a fetching pink poncho but even that didn't do much so we were soaked. The views were amazing but just a little dull without the sunshine.I feel for foreign tourists...
