Jan 29, 2007 - Australia - Charters Towers
After a BBQ lunch at the dive shop we hit the road to begin the long journey across the red land to Uluru (Ayers Rock) but this would take many days of driving so we planned to stop along the way firstly at Charters Towers. Built to cope with the gold rush some of its lovely buildings remain. Originally called "The World" it had over 30,000 people here and at one point over 100 mines and 25 pubs. Some 9,400 people remain in the rural community with cattle and mining as the main industries. Ayr to Charters Towers 190kms
