May 27, 2004 - First week of practice

I've now finished my first full week in practice in the Bowen Medical Centre. Very busy - about 25-30 patients daily. The patients are a mix of all nationalities, all languages. They flock in as backpackers to pick the fruits and vegetables that Bowen is famous for. Turkish, Thai, German, Japanese, and all parts of Australia. The town swells during these harvest months. Everyone seems truely welcome, whether tent city dwellers or upscale tourists. The pay in the fields is about $14/hour I'm told, and the pickers and packers work 10 or more...

Mar 17, 2004 - The Whitsundays - Airlie Beach (via Rockhampton)

We caught the bus from Theodore to Rockhampton and kipped down the night at the YHA. That was a nice hostel. Then we caught the early bus to Airlie Beach the following morning. We checked into our hostel called Backpackers by the Bay which was really nice. Only a short stroll into town and nice views across the bay. 4 people in the dorm so nice and small. We had planned on doing a sailing trip around the Whitsundays for a couple of days but Murphys Law depicted a bloody cyclone the weekend we were there so all trips were cancelled. By...
