Jun 10, 2004 - Cairns - 2 days on the Vagabond

This evening I have arrived from 2 days trip on Vagabond. It was absolutely amazing. Vagabond is a name of the yacht on which we were sailing to Great barrier reef and we were diving there. We started at 8 o'clock yesterday. Because it was small sail, there were just 9 passanger, plus 3 crewmembers; 3 guys from USA (2 sisters and their young brother), 1 couple from UK, 1 couple from Australia, 1 english guy (he has interesting last name - Nixon) and me. As we left Cairns, we were sailing against the current and we had quite big waves (2-3...

Jun 8, 2004 - Cairns - day 1

Today at 6 o'clock I have had flight from Darwin to Cairns. I had to wake up very earlier, as I wrote before, fire alarm did most of the work ... I was flying to Cairns with Quantas, as usual, high level of services. I am very satisfied with this airline. I arrived to Cairns around 10 o'clock, weather absolutely same as in Darwin, around 30C. Cairns seems to be much more hilly than Darwin. I booked room at Gilligans hostel. After my experiences with hostels in Alice Springs and Darwin, I was really impressed with hostel. It is more hotel...

Jun 3, 2004 - Queensland - A Tropical Paradise

Hello all! No apologies for the time passed since our last email but we have both been having far too much fun to think of the little people back home!! Also, no apologies for those of you who will have heard parts of our tale so far already – we have no idea what day it is, let alone who we have sent postcards to and at what point. So please bear with us through any repetition. Well, we left Melbourne on 23rd June. It was 14 degrees and pissing it down with rain so it was a happy happy day. We arrived in Cairns (tropical Queensland) and it...

Apr 1, 2004 - Cairns and Kuranda

Well, my time in Cairns is nearly at an end - we leave for New Zealand early tomorrow morning (6am!!). The hostel we've been staying in has been really good - it's called the global palace and is right in the centre of town. Claire, Majella and I have our own room which is good and the lounge room has the biggest tv I've ever seen!! Got to watch Pearl Harbour on it on Sun night. Basically I've just spent 5 days relaxing, reading books and wandering around Cairns. Yesterday we went to Kuranda which was great. We caught the skyrail up - which...

Mar 24, 2004 - Cairns

We caught the bus up to Cairns - in the rain! Fab. The hostel we checked into was grotty so we decided to look around for another better place to move to the following day. We soon found a nicer place to stay and arranged to move there in the morning. First impressions of Cairns were not as we expected. It's very much a party place and fully catered for backpackers and 18-30s. There are so many dive and reef trips touting for your business, it gets a bit pushy at times. We imagined a tropical paradise - that it is not! It's not a bad little...

Big Fat Trip

Mar 20, 2004 - Cairns, gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

We had a good drive back to Brisbane, stayed the night at a motel near the airport and then headed to airport the next morning. Had a mad panic at the airport as nobody told us that the Cairns flight leaves from the International Terminal and not the Domestic, so had to catch a train to the other terminal. Luckily the plane was slightly delayed so had time for a guiness, well it was St Patrick's Day. We had a good flight to Cairns (the air-stewards were very beer friendly) and then promptly arranged our diving for Saturday (today). However,...

Feb 11, 2004 - Long Island/Cairns

Up and at 'em early for our last long day in the bus. Left the island about 7:30 and headed to Townsville (that's right, Townsville) for lunch. There wasn't much there (surprise, surprise) so we had just enough time for lunch and then we were back at it. Arrived in Cairns about 6:00 and got ready to go out. Headed to a local place for dinner and it wasn't bad. Came back to the resort, which is pretty nice, and hung out for a while with some folks who also didn't go out to the bar. We apparently missed some of our tour compatriots fare...

Colin's World Tour

Sep 10, 2003 - The Thorax, and other stories

'Queensland - The Sunshine State', is not exactly the most evocative or imaginative description for a massive area that encompasses deserted beaches, pristine rainforest and hundreds of miles of outback bushland, however as we stepped off the plane in Cairns, it seemed pretty apt. Our taxi driver, dressed in freshly-pressed khaki shorts and long, white socks, proved that Aussies in the north-west are just as chatty and friendly as those in Sydney and he gave us the low-down of things we should try and do while in Cairns. After adding these...
