Feb 28, 2016 - Palm Cove, Cairns

Very early start this morning, had got used to not getting up too early. Left hotel at about 6am, nearly the only ones walking the Sydney streets. We were getting slightly worried that we’d left all the friendly people behind in NZ, but on arriving in Cairns today, found them. The car hire guy was friendly and funny, the guy in the booze shop was great but maybe just another wino down under! This has restored our faith in the Australian people. Drove up to Palm Cove and when turning into Palm Cove itself the car slowed down, we’d just...

Nov 4, 2015 - Tokyo to Cairns

Today was officially the end of the tour. Several of the group had to leave for the airport early in the morning but my flight wasn’t until 8:10pm so I didn’t have to start for the airport until about 2:00pm. I took off by myself with the first stop being the Tokyo Skytree which is officially the tallest tower in the world. It was a very clear day & you could even make out snow-capped Mount Fuji in the distance. It’s 106 km away so quite remarkable that you could see that far. I wanted to catch the hop-on hop-off bus but just missed one &...

Aug 3, 2015 - Day 37 - 39 / Cairns

Down the mountain we went this morning. From Kuranda to Cairns is pretty hair raising but you just have to take it slowly and there are places every now and then to let traffic pass. We were here about lunch time and then we went in to the city. The foreshore is beautifully done up with lots of activities available for people; beach volleyball, skateboarding, swimming, kid's play area, and just lush, green grass to sit or lie upon. There is also a lovely park area at the end of our CP. We will probably stay only 2 nights in Cairns; one...

Jun 17, 2015 - Cairns

Hello again, Some things I forgot to tell you all: - remember the sunnies I lost way back at Dalby in November? found them yesterday behind the passenger seat amongst a lot of stuff. - the caravan hitch that broke. The guy visited me at Chambers Flat and replaced the hitch free of charge and gave me a spare hitch pin (after having refunded the money I paid to have it repaired, PLUS an extr4a $100) - result of having the fuel pump rolled back at Edgeroi: I was getting 20 litres/100 klms, now I get, variously, 17, 18 or 19 so not much of an...

Apr 21, 2015 - Cruise - At Sea on 21 April

FOBTs, Today's update will be short. There are no pictures, but I did pose for some shots of me in my "dress up" for the so-called formal evening. I'm exercising a lot, for instance I walked 12 laps around the promenade deck to do 4 miles and used the exercise bikes yesterday. I also bought a spa package that has use of a steam room (love that), sauna, these tiled warming couches that slowly infuse warmth into all of the back and leg muscles, and a Jacuzzi mineral pool. Does that ever make you feel great! This afternoon at an art auction, I...

Apr 14, 2015 - Sydney - Day 2

FOBTs, Once again I had wonderfully sunny and mild weather here down under. I believe tomorrow is supposed to be a repeat. More importantly, tomorrow (15 April here) is U.S. income tax day, which fortunately I took care of doing before embarking on this adventure. I'm thinking of going to this very good restaurant at the top of the Shangri-La Hotel for dinner to celebrate. I did a lot of walking today, and you'll see pictures of the early governor of New South Wales (the state Sydney is the capital) Major General Lachlan Macquarie and...

Apr 13, 2015 - Sydney - Day 1 - Arrival

FOBTs, I successfully meet my driver for the trip into downtown Sydney. This is one very spread out city. My Mercedes conveyance was nicely luxurious, and the hotel is truly a boutique hotel, meaning small, older touches (like the picture of the dining room you will see), black and white tile in the bathroom, and a truly old radio that reminds me of a 1950-1960s radio. After settling in, I started exploring Sydney. There are many more people here than in any of the cities in which I have been in on this trip. I took a bus down to Circular...

Apr 12, 2015 - Brisbane - Last Day

Well FOBTs, It is really early in the morning here on Sunday, 12 April. I arose at 0245 to call my British Columbia friend, Barb, and to my almost astonishment she did not immediately recognize the melodious tone of my voice! Weather permitting today, I plan to examine walking the superstructure of a bridge, called the Story Bridge, here in Brisbane. I figure if I can do that, then this would make doing the longer, and probably higher, Harbor Bridge in Sydney doable. I'm also going to check out the whole thing about rappelling down Kangaroo...

Apr 11, 2015 - Brisbane - Day 2

Hello FOBTs, It's morning here in Brisbane, and a sunny one at that. The temperature is supposed to reach 24C so it ought to be good walking around. After finishing my update last night, I read a brochure about St. Stephen's Cathedral (I believe I called it a church...a mistake on my part). The cathedral opened in 1874, and given its obvious age, the effect of its interior was surprising in so far I expected it to be more dark, closed, or the like. I found the openness and light refreshing. The stained glass in the center and to the right...

Apr 10, 2015 - Rain, rain go away

Good early morning (0530) FOBTs, After I finished my update yesterday, the skies opened up and a tropical deluge began. It was kind enough to pause while I walked to dinner and back, and it has continued off and on all night. I awakened to its continued presence this morning. I guess this is a tropical depression of some sort because on the news last night I just caught the end of the 7 day forecast that showed rain every day. Good thing I'm getting out of town, and hopefully the weather in Brisbane will be better. Have a good day or...

Apr 9, 2015 - Cairns - Last Day

Hello FOBTs, The picture included in this update may not have been included in the one for 8 April about my balloon adventure. If it's a duplicate, enjoy it again because I do think it's a pretty good photo. Today is a relaxation day. I did not arise until almost 0900 local, which is kind of amazing for me to sleep that long. The weather is somewhat cloudy, but I am going to venture forth for a walkabout (don't think I used that Australian term before) to see if I left any reasonable part of Cairns unexplored by your intrepid explorer. I...

Apr 8, 2015 - Cairns - Day 3 - Up in the air

FOBTs, First of all, please go back to yesterday and see the last two photos I uploaded this morning. I think you will like them. Speaking of photos, the reason I have been complaining of late about trouble uploading pictures is twofold. One, the two pictures I just added to the update of the 7th took over 20 minutes to successfully upload. At this juncture, I can only have a chance of doing two pictures at a time, and at 20 minutes per session, that adds up to a lot of time. A secondary problem tied to this is that sometimes the uploading...
