May 26, 2009 - Hook Island, Whitehaven Beach and Day Dream Island.

We woke at 6am and hurriedly had breakfast and got bathers etc ready for the day. I was happy I did not have to prepare any food for the day and there was to be a bus collecting us to take us to the boat so no driving either!!!! We were to leave at 7.20am. We met a couple that Sean met last night at the Laundry. After boarding the boat we headed upstairs to the back lounges and chatted to a couple from Adelaide and two girls from Pennsylvania. Whilst I was getting a coffee(tasted foul) Sean moved us to a drier spot and we once again chatted...

May 25, 2009 - Cedar Creek Falls and RAIN AGAIN!!!!

We woke exhausted from the day before and spent the morning coaxing the older two to do their diaries....no one said this would be the toughest part of the trip!!! I took Sara and Miranda to the shops to buy Rhiannon a new hairbrush and some goodies for today's picnic lunch. We stopped off at Donut King and had donuts and hot drinks. We did a quick sprint to the car as it started to rain. We got back to the diaries still to be done!!!! We finally gave up on the diaries and went to Red Rooster for a chicken as the Woolworths one looked weeks...

May 24, 2009 - Hamilton Island

We woke early and were in the car by 6.30am driving to Shute Harbour. We caught the ferry as it was leaving to Hamilton Island. We tried to hire a buggy but they only seat 4 so we caught the free shuttle after first stopping at the bakery for some breakfast. The shuttle driver was very softly spoken but very informative and whilst having a tour of the island met some interesting people the first was a local that sounded so much like Glen(Em's Husband)and the other notable character was a young guy who was catching the shuttle back to his...

May 23, 2009 - Airlie Beach Markets

We woke and as it was market day I took the two youngest for a bus ride into Arilie Beach main street and enjoyed a morning browsing in stalls that were sitting on the beach. Sara and Miranda enjoyed the playground and the frozen mango icy and were very keen to ride the camels but I wanted them to wait till all four could go together. We went back to the van expecting the older two to have caught up on their diaries and maths work but sadly they were mucking around and Sean is not a disciplinarian. So whilst Sara and Miranda with Sean went...

May 22, 2009 - Spending the day in Mackay

Sara was the most excited when we woke she loved the idea that we had parked “ out on the road” and slept in the car!!! After showering and dressing we drove into Mackay. We parked and went in search of a cafe for breakfast we settled on Cafe La de da. After eating a big breakfast we strolled the main street. I found a beautician and booked in for some waxing and gel toes!!! We then did a quick shop at Coles before driving to the lagoon and swimming pools. The kids changed and went with Sean to enjoy the warmth, 23 degrees!!! I went to the...

Mar 26, 2009 - Airlie Beach - Whitsunday's

I love wasting time at a computer - just spent 25 mins writing this page to be told session ended! Arrived in Airlie Beach mid morning and booking on to the British Defender which was a 40ft boat(check literature?) used by the forces for round the world races. As such facilities below deck were sparse. I got the bottom bunk near one of the two working toilets/shower cubicles. We were informed 60 sec showers were all we were permitted. Up on deck the main sail was hoisted (after grinding and rope pulling) and we had to sit on one side of the...

Mar 5, 2009 - Beach Town

We headed down the coast to Airlie Beach and did some shopping on the way. This is one of the spots that I came to my first visit and it looked the same, but developed a bit in 12 years. Still a great little town. After we set up we walked around downtown, main street. But we are finding that most of Australia doesn't have the hours of operation that North American has ... so most places close at 5, some are open late here.. to 7 O'clock. So we have to plan our shopping times carefully....I have not been able to spend like I had planned.

Mar 4, 2009 - In and about Airlie Beach

Wednesday March 4 Today we explored Airlie Beach. Although we had planned to buy bicycles in Cairns to have with us, the campervan has no way to carry them inside or attache them to a rack outside. So, we caught the local bus from our campervan site to the centre of town. Airlie Beach is very oriented to backpackers and trippers to the Whitsunday Islands (tour offices, car, boat and other rentals, beachwear and souvenir stores as well as lots of restaurants). It was not really impressive as a place in the downtown, but was quite attractive...

Mar 4, 2009 - Heading North to Cairns

So since we last wrote we have had a busy few days. We have driven up to Airlie Beach with stops at Hervey Bay and the town of 1770. Hervey bay was a great place and we had a hostel right near the beach. This is where we enjoyed a long walk on the beach that day and came home to our no towels, no soap no blanket hostel room. It was actually a nice room, but bare bones bunk beds and the smallest bathroom physically possible to still fit a shower, toilet and sink. From there we moved on to 1770. As we were planning this stop everyone we...

Mar 3, 2009 - Airlie Beach

Tuesday March 3 This morning we had breakfast on the beachfront Strand in Townsville after leaving the campsite. We took an early morning walk along the Strand and visited a short pier where there were a few folks fishing. We moved on to visit the Reef HQ Aquarium. What an interesting place and well worth a visit. We took in a number of the guided talks, each only about twenty minutes and learned about the creepy crawlers of the deep and coral. We also attended a talk that was done with a diver in the tank who showed the trutle and the...

Jan 19, 2009 - Airlie Beach & the Whitsundays

I arrived in Airlie Beach at around 9:30 PM the night before my 2 night sailing trip to the Whitsunday Islands. After a pretty interesting night out I woke up early and went to check in and get ready for the boat. Arrived at the boat at around 1:30 PM and started meeting the group. It was about 20 people and with the exception of one couple, everyone was under the age of 30. The boat itself was kind of a dump. This was to be expected as it was the cheapest trip i could find. In any case, we had a pretty good group of people. There were...

Jan 13, 2009 - My holidays - The Whitsundays.
