Jun 24, 2012 - Seaforth to Airlie Beach

Seaforth is a beautiful little town just under 30ks north of Mackay. The camp we stayed in was from the camps book and listed as a council run caravan park with toilets and showers right on the foreshore in town. It seems like they probably got sick of caravans camping there for nothing so they put up a fence and stuck a caretaker there and started charging so they could make some money out of the tourists! We had to pay a nightly fee of $21 an there was no access to power or water, just toilets and showers. We thought that was a bit steep...

Apr 11, 2012 - Airlie Beach

Next up was Airlie beach from here, the Whitsunday’s tours leave. The Whitsundays are a big group of islands off the coast. When we got there we went in to book our tours but they were full, we should have booked ahead. We had to wait 4 days for our Whitsunday’s trip and 5 if we decided to dive. Airlie is literally just a small street 5 min walk from top to bottom but it is filled with people waiting to go on tours. It has a few shops, a bank, couple bottle shops and loads of bars. It’s quite fun for a few days going out meeting people etc....

Oct 30, 2011 - Airlie Beach

The 5:30 am airport pick-up was a little painful, but the airport wasn't as bad as I feared given the Qantas shutdown. The flight to Hamilton Island was a little puddle-jumper prop plane, and the passengers had a little laugh at the Hamilton Island airport, because instead of baggage carousels, they just pull the baggage tug up to where you exit the airport and you pull your own bag off and go on your merry way. From there I had to take a ferry to Airlie Beach on the mainland. Made it to the travel company I'd booked with and got everything...

Aug 9, 2011 - Airlie Beach

We got up nice and early this morning and was on our way by half 8 heading towards Airlie Beach. We stopped off to get fuel and cash in Ayr then hit the road! We made it to the Whitsunday region and stopped in Bowen for a nice break at the beach. We then shortly arrived at beautiful Airlie Beach! We headed for the Base Backpackers place as a couple told us they took campervans for 25 dollars a night. When we arrived we thought we might like to do a dive – and what a choice! In the end Kelsey and I decided to go for an overnight sail! We are...

Jul 12, 2011 - Sugar Waves

This morning we woke up at 5:30 and had breakfast at six thirty. We left Yeppoon for a long day of driving. We drove to the Capricorn Caves(I forgot to tell you, we passed over the Tropic of Capricorn). We pulled into the parking lot and got off the bus. We met our cave guide, a very energetic young man who gets up every morning at five to go for a jog. Marie and I were right behind our guide. The caves were limestone caves accessible from the surface. We walked through a cave, up some stairs and across a bridge to an open topped cave where...

Apr 8, 2011 - Whitsunday Islands Adventure

After an awful all night bus ride from Agnes Water, I got a pleasant surprise when I arrived in Airlie Beach. First I guess there was a bit of bad news. I went to check in for my sailing trip and was told that I was the only one who had signed up to head out on the specific boat...booo! The good news though was that I was getting upgraded to a bigger, better and more expensive boat at no extra cost to me! Instead of having to wait to head out on the boat the next day, this new sailing boat was heading out to sea that afternoon...in two...

Reeds Down Under

Feb 18, 2011 - Airlie Beach

Arrived in Airlie Beach. Its gorgeous,a real seaside town. We landed in Proserpine which was hilarious. The flight was delayed and when we eventually landed the airport was a little shack in the middle of nowhere. We literally stepped off the plane, walked into a shed and we were through the airport. When they brought the bags out to the side of the road on a trolley I thought Sean was gonna havta be sedated it was that funny!! Got on the bus and went to the apartment we had booked. Its gorgeous...we have a jacuzzi on the balcony looking...

Feb 12, 2011 - What day is it??

It is about that time in a long vacation where I have lost track of what day of the week it is and what the date is (although my birthday is coming up so I should be keeping track!)... It has been a full week... In Cairns we were greeted with monsoon like downpours as we tried to get our suitecases into the rental car as the signs greeted us with "Welcome to Queensland, the Sunshine State". We saw mostly rain, but it always passed and there was sun behind it. We drove up to Cape Tribulation and were pretty much the only people staying at...

Nina's Travels

Jan 26, 2011 - Airlie Beach (Whitsundays)

Airlie Beach – 8 January to 22 January (14 nights) The short 79km drive from Bowen to Airlie Beach was uneventful and sugar-caneless most of the way. The first glimpse of the Airlie Beach township itself is, in a word, spectacular. Driving into town from an elevated position one gets a breathtaking view of Shingley Beach, Abel Point Marina, Pioneer Bay, Airley Bay, The Coral Sea and the Whitsunday Islands – with the most turquoise of ocean you’ve ever seen, it really is a sight to behold. I would even go so far as to say it’s probably the...
