The plaza downtown

Today we travelled 145 miles each way to the Ajo historical museum and The New Cornelia Mine site that had closed a few years ago.It was an 8 1/2 return trip that wound up our last thing to see here in Arizona this year.

The folks who share the mine site information had lots of info because the husband had worked there for years. I didnt know that they had a train running around in circles taking the copper out. There was more than 300 MILES of railroad track in there. It was removed when they closed it, but there is lots of track still visible up top in the surrounding area still laying there.First locomotives were steam then evolved to diesel electric.

The Ajo Historical Museum is located just a few minutes away from downtown Ajo at the St. Catherine's Indian Mission 1/4 mile to the west of the mine overlook on the Mine lookout road.

Ajo is the Spanish word for garlic (Spanish pronunciation) AH-hoh

Downtown Ajo is quite a site with the murals and the very pretty Ajo Plaza. Lots of traffic moving thru here on their way to Rocky Point Mexico. (Puerto Penasco)
