Big section from northern PA through 72 miles of NJ and into NY. My internet connection is spotty so this entry will be short. The rocks were horrible in the remaining miles of PA to the point that I would have quit the hike if that was my first section of the hike. This awful section included scrambling up a mile long boulder field and then 8 mile hike through a hideous Superfund site - hot humid and no water sources. This part of NW PA was used for 100 years for zinc smelting. Very rough section. We stayed in Delaware Water Gap at the border of PA and NJ - a small town with mediocre lodging and restaurants. The laundry facilities were broken at our crummy motel so we hand-washed our filthy smelly clothes in the nasty bathtub and hung our bear bag line across the room to dry them. Next day into NJ where we hiked for about 4 days. Pleasant with easy climbs and mild weather, plus a convenient place not too far off trail to stop for a cold drink every afternoon. What a luxury. Hiked and camped with various friends for past several days including Hobbitt who is a 3-time thru-hiker. We stayed at the Jim Murray Secret Shelter one night - just us and Hobbitt - private property open to hikers. Nice clean cold well water and even a shower. Very pleasant night. We also were scared by our first big rattlesnake and first bear in NJ.

I texted our trail angel Fresh Ground and he met us at the last shelter in NJ with dinner and breakfast. All our hiker friends were very impressed that a simple text conjured up free hot grilled food and cold drinks! Next day into NY with 10 miles of big rock climbing and then a 4 mile walk into town. We spent 2 nights in Warwick NY and on our day off took a bus to NYC for the day. Gordon’s boots finally fell apart so we bought new ones in the city, plus ate some great street food and enjoyed the concrete jungle!

Back out tomorrow - we should finish NY and be in CT within a week at most.
