On the old train

Carnival Splendor

Puntarenus Port

Sat jan 20

Today, we were in Puntarenas, Costa Rica and did the Bus, train, and boat tour. It was a nice, modern, bus, and we had a good tour guide, Norman. We then rode on a refurbished train from the 1800s. It was a nice ride, with kids waving at us when we went by their homes. We went by lots and lots of watermelon farms. A lot of the people live in poverty. Minimum wage is $2 per hour. The train went through a very, very narrow tunnel. After that we went on a boat tour through Crocodile Safari. We saw lots of crocodiles and birds. Costa Rica has over 25% of its land dedicated to National Parks, reserves, and wildlife refuges, the highest percentage of any country in the world. Volcanoes formed a lot of the land. We also passed lots of banana and mango trees. Mangos are not ready until July. We passed lots of goats, horses, brahmas, chickens, turtles, dogs, and lots of crocodiles. We went by 3-4 cell towers and did have reception in the port. Many homes had satellite dishes, and we did see one with a pool. These places were all in the country. We did do some shopping in the port area. I bought a sundress for $7. There is a beach right off the pier. It was very hot here so we didn't spend much time in town. Back to the pool/hot tubs on the ship...Entertainment tonite was the Viva variety show. It was Chuck Wagner singing Broadway hits. Although he was a good singer, I didn't care for the songs. We did our second bag of free laundry today. It's nice that they will wash, dry, and fold your clothes for you. We get 10 bags between us. Bean bag toss again today with no success...
