Day 25 - Thursday 5th October - Peenemunde

Heavy rain showers during the night, pretty noisy on the roof. Consequently we were up early & on our way by 7.30am again. As it happened last night when I was researching our next stopover I discovered that a Peenemunde was virtually on our planned route so we headed there. I knew the name & thought, correctly as it turned out, that it had something to do with the V1 & V2 rockets that Germany developed towards the end of WW2.

We stayed on the coast road to Swinoujscie just before the border with Germany. Rather than take a long detour to the South to the nearest bridge over the river I opted for the free ferry service. This was great apart from the two & a half hours we spent in the mile & a half queue along the approach road. At least we had a toilet on board & were able to have our lunch as we crept along. Still we toughed it out & were eventually packed on board & crossed to the other side.

Then it was only a few miles further to the border so we took the chance to fill up with diesel & use up the remainder of our Polish Zlotys before crossing back to Germany. It was only another 30 miles approx. to Peenemunde & it rained all the way. Our camp site for the night was on the side of a small harbour & was awash with all the rain. Fortunately the ground was pretty solid so we just connected up the electricity & shut ourselves in for the night to listen to the rain on the roof once again.
