The flight to Christchurch was completely unremarkable; which is to say it was very smooth and uneventful - just the way a flight should be! The same cannot be said about our hire car pick up. The lady from the rental company picked us up and took us out to the office, which was all fine, and we begrudgingly paid the additional insurance fees.
We then asked about the need for snow chains, as we were going into areas where they may be required. It seemed as though snow was forecast for Arthur's Pass, where we will be driving in a couple of days, and roads had recently been closed around Te Anau, where we will be next week. So, we decided to stump up the extra $70 and take chains. Then the fun began! The lady couldn't decide on which were the correct chains for our vehicle, then couldn't get them to fit properly. After what seemed like an hour, we said we would return the next day to get the chains, when her manager would be in.
The last exciting event of the day was a big shop at New World, to stock up on supplies for the next few days on the West Coast. After the day we had, we were quite happy with a BBQ chicken and blanched veg for dinner! Our apartment in Christchurch is very good. It is on the top floor of a fairly new building and is very well equipped. It will be a good base in which to relax for a day or two, before our big drive on Tuesday.
Tomorrow, we will explore Christchurch, a city we haven't been to for 13 years and which we didn't really get to know last time.
