Haven't been able to find anything particularly unpleasant or tragic about Wismar to share but I will continue to try.
Once you pass into the old East Germany the change is obvious - poorer, less well kept, more likely to vote ... I'll let you figure that one out.
There is some evidence that my remote ancestors migrated from Wismar at some point around the 13th century. However, Wismar is more noted for its remarkable red brick Gothic Cathedrals. While only one tower remains of the main Cathedral and another is still undergoing restoration, St Nicolas is a delight. The brick interior gives quite a different experience than the usual Gothic stonework.
A bit like being in a fireplace with low embers. My photos don't do it justice.
Ah! Horror movie fans will be interested to learn that the 1922 horror classic, Nosferatu, was filmed in Wismar.
Sometimes you just need to dig a little deeper.
