On the Road with Tom and Gloria travel blog

Before making the 4 1/2 hour drive to Poplar Bluff, MO I took a tour of the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green. Corvettes were originally built in Michigan, then St. Louis, and now ONLY in Bowling Green, KY. In 1981, the city gave GM a 99 year lease for $1.00 per year on this building that had been vacated by Chrysler and then an air conditioning company.

The factory employs 1000 workers : 800 lines people, 100 salaried, and 100 contract employees. This group manages to produce 17.2 cars per hour ( 172 per each 10 hour shift.) The saying here is they don't just build cars they build dreams. Well in 2016 they made 40,688 dreams come true. The base cost is 56,450 and the most expensive one built to date is 138,000.

The tour is approximately 1 1/4 miles of walking - closed toes shoes required. Everything has to be left in your car. No purses, backpacks, cell phones, cameras, kids, or sandals allowed.

It was a good tour especially after visiting the museum yesterday. I had to park so far away from the entrance that I tacked on another 1/2 mile it seemed there and back!

Felt good to sit down and begin my drive to Poplar Bluff.
