The White House

Supreme Court

Today's schedule is a tour of the Supreme Court building and Arlington. We were not able to schedule a tour of the White House. We were told that tours were booked through August. Once again Anne had arranged the Supreme Court tour ahead of time, so we were able to go inside the chambers and hear a 30 minute presentation about the court and the Justices. The courtroom was smaller than I expected but nonetheless grand.

Afterward we ate lunch in the cafeteria at which time I asked if we could include a look at the White House from the gates. Everyone agreed but as we started our walk, it seemed like maybe it was not such a good idea. It was much warmer today and the additional walking almost did us in!! We got to the gates totally exhausted, had a long admiring look at this majestic home of the United States President, snapped a picture and started our long slow walk back to METRO to go out to Arlington. Once we reached Arlington, more walking to find a trolley to take us through. The only time we got off the trolley was at the tomb of the unknown soldier. We wanted to see the changing of the guard, but as it turned out there was a long ceremony for a visiting dignitary and we waited a long while for the officers to get there. As hot as we were, we could only imagine how hot all the fully uniformed soldiers were standing at perfect attention!! Looking back today I am so glad we got to see this impressive ceremony but at the time we were thinking "where is the trolley??"

The trolley dropped us off and I said can we just get a taxi, but in reality the METRO was not too far, so a walking we went again!! Reached our RV park at last. It was our last night together with Mike and Anne as we are leaving for West Virginia for the next phase of our journey and our friends will head on northeast. We cooked steaks and shared with one another our favorite parts of our trip, which was plenty!! Great trip, great friends, who could ask for anything more!!! Thanks Mike and Anne for everything and we wish you both safe travels.
