Yerevan to Lake Sevan and return

Today we set off to visit more historic sites near Yerevan and also Lake Sevan. There was very little traffic in the city as it was Sunday. First we drove to Geghard Monastery in the hills just outside Yerevan. It was first built in the 4th century AD, then rebuilt in the 920’s, over 1100 years ago. It was carved out of solid rock from the top down, quite an amazing place. There were many people visiting today as it was Sunday. We spoke to a number of locals and had many photos taken with them and then listened to a church service for a short while. We then moved on to Garni Pagan Temple built in the 1st century AD, the home of Armenian kings. Like al the other temples and monasteries, it was built in a commanding position on top of high cliffs above a river. Quite a spot! We then went to lunch at a local family's house and believe it or not, Kim Kardashian had visited there for lunch when she was in Armenia in 2015. After lunch we drove about an hour to the north to Lake Sevan to visit the Sevanank Monastery, built in the 9th century AD and destroyed in the earthquake of 1988. It has since been restored so it looked relatively new, but the position was stunning. It used to be on an island in the lake, but it is now not surrounded by water but is on a peninsula. It has a historic cross stone inside (one with Jesus on the cross) which is very rare in Armenia. We then drove back to Yerevan, had a short rest then out to dinner with some of the group. Late to bed, after midnight. Day was fine, mostly warm and sunny, around 25C maximum.
