Kerang to Ararat
Slower start than anticipated as Den had a stomach bug and needed an ablution block at the ready! Travelled back through Boort, Charlton & St Arnaud then onto Ararat – we feel like we’ve been stuck on a merry go round going nowhere between Kerang, Murtoa and Bendigo for the past week, so it felt good to be on the move again! Tried to see the works of the famous Spannerman outside of Boort, but he wasn’t home!
Ararat is so full of history, as are the surrounding townships, so we have decided to stay here for 4 nights and visit the Grampians, Pyrenees wineries and other local historical sites on a daily basis – better than packing up for a few klms drive each day. Buildings in the town that have been restored are beautiful. Den used to come here a lot as his previous wife was from Ararat. After we visit her grave we will be cemeteried out for years to come!
You realise how desperate the drought is in SW Victoria when you drive through klms of dry land and listen to radio stations talking of mental health roadshows to provide assistance to those in need. My cousins have suffered depression and have farmer friends commit suicide - it is just as desperate as the situation in Qld.
Stats:33 degrees – but cooler conditions and even rain forecast overnight.
