Night-time by the river.

As Jaime and I ambled through the city, trying to avoid the heat of the afternoon sun, we felt confused. We weren't able to make sense of this capital city. It seemed too quiet. We walked passed building estates that were closed up and deserted. We found bridges that lead to nowhere. Along the river and in the parks, we encountered very few people.

But then the sun set and Vientiane took on a completely new form. The night market comes to life and fills with people. Street vendors line the roads and people sit down to eat at small tables along the pavements. We sit on the bank of the river and watch the lights play off the water. This feels more like it. We stay here for hours.
