We headed east out of Avignon to area called the Luberon valley. There are many villages perched on hills in the beautiful countryside of course full of vineyards. Our road took us to the village of Gordes. Coming up to village from the main road you suddenly get this amazing view of the village. A cluster of honey-coloured buildings seemingly clinging to a sheer rock face. The village was the usual cluster of houses with narrow cobbled streets and of course a chateaux and the church dominating the town square.

From there we headed to the village of Roussilon which again perched on a hill but this time the village houses were all different shades of the ochre tints which were once quarried in the area. As well as exploring the village we took the “Sentiers des Ocres just outside the village, The park is situated in an old ochre quarry and is full of colourful and oddly shaped rocks and pinnacles of ochre. The colours were just amazing and reminded us of the rocks of Bryce and Zion canyons in the USA. Again from the village there were great views across the surrounding countryside
