Resting in Rhinelander... nice campground, sorry we couldn't stay longer

August 5

Got underway about 10 a.m., headed west to Wisconsin. Goodbye to the Great Lakes!

Takeaway from our 3 weeks in Michigan:

Beautiful marinas, exceptional flower gardens, blueberry pie, cherry pie.... and roadside stands everywhere selling “washed cherries!”

Breathtaking vistas, ferry rides, friendly folks, and miles and miles of dense forests.

Crossing the Straits of Macinaw on the “Big Mac.”

Lakeshore breezes. Michigan is windy most of the time!

Roadside wildflowers, waterfront parks, historic lighthouses, and beautiful white birches everywhere.

Lots and lots of opportunity for out of doors activities: biking, swimming, sailing, boating, hiking.

Riding the 8.2 mile bike path on Macinaw Island and seeing all the cairns that visitors have built along the waterfront.

Pictured Rocks cruise.

Fascinating geologic history of Michigan.

Overwhelming size and beauty of Lake Superior—the largest freshwater lake in the world at almost 32,000 square miles.

The amazing dunes at Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore.

The colored light / music/ water fountain show Tuesday nights on the Grand Haven waterfront!

Goodbye Michigan. We'll be back :0)
