Shearwin's in Europe 2015 travel blog

We departed our hotel just after 0900hrs for CDG. While waiting and during the shuttle run, we spoke with a very pleasant French lady who spoke English well. The experience had "one" thinking?

Our check in was painful and we rate CDG and Sydney as two of the least desirable airports; not a patch on Changi or even Heathrow. We departed on time and arrived in Singapore on time at 0650 hrs after a smooth, uneventful flight spent watching movies. Our chicken dinner on the flight was exceptional and memorable; a " real melt in your mouth meat".

On arrival, our first task was to arrange accommodation at the Ambassador Transit Hotel. We had no joy booking on line 3 days before, however, finding a six hour window on arrival proved no problem. We arranged for a twin room with shower for 12 - 1800hrs.

After storing our carry bags at the left bags counter; slow with much paper work, we cleared immigration and took the SMRT to Bayfront to visit the Bay Gardens and the Marina Bay Sands. It was just after 0800hrs and crowds were starting to build; the trip took approximately 45 mins and included two train changes.

We walked from Bayfront through the underground tunnel to the gardens and around the lake area of the gardens. This was an area we were unable to complete on our last trip. While it was humid, it was still comfortable; the only people in the gardens at the time were the gardeners and cleaners.

We took the bridge connecting the Gardens with the Sands and wandered the shopping area, stoping to sample the Yum Cha in the food court. We were both in agreement that the area is very attractive and always worth a visit.

We returned by the MRT as it started to rain and arrived back at 1200hrs in time to occupy our room. We both had a good sleep and felt the exercise of a 6 hour sleep for what was a fourteen hour lay over well worthwhile.

Our flight at 2115hrs was nearly and hour late in taking off, and the time spent after leaving the hotel was spent shopping for the family. The A380 was full for the return flight and time was made up allowing us to land at 0630hrs- 20 mins late. Immigration clearance using the scanners was quick, however, baggage collection was slow with bags accumulating from passengers passing through the immigration stalls.

We had booked our bus for 0915hrs, however, after a coffee at the Rydges we were able to take an earlier bus at 0845hrs. The day was fine initially but became overcast with light showers when approaching Canberra, the winds were very strong all day; markedly so for our bus.

We were home at 1220hrs officially ending Op Europe 2015
