Franschhoek, South Africa

After breakfast at the guest house today, we walked down to the main street and bought tickets on the Franschhoek Wine Tram which commenced at 10:00am. This trip lasts all day and wends its way around a number of the wineries near Franschhoek where you visit for an hour and have wine tastings (some free, some not) and then move on to the next winery. Although the tram visits 7 wineries it is only possible to visit 6 due to the tram schedule and so we decided to not visit the first on the route. So we travelled to the second winery and just a few of us alighted and had a free tasting of one white and 2 red wines. We bought a bottle of wine at this winery which is set quite close to the town in superb countryside. At the next winery, we had another tasting – this time of 3 reds, didn’t buy there, but chatted to some nice people. The day continued in the same vein, chatting, tasting, chatting, tasting, very pleasant and included snacks, chocolates etc. At about 6pm, we finally got back to the guest house and had an aperitif……as if we needed one after all the wine…..before heading out to dinner at a local restaurant. Franschhoek is “the gastronomic capital of South Africa” and is actually a really nice town.
