Paul and Basilio Travel to Belize travel blog

A little island rests just off the bank of a lake at Santa Elena. It is the island town of Flores. Why did we come here? I suppose I wanted to come here only because it was close and sounded like a pretty place to spend a night. Tomorrow we return to Belize, but this evening I am sitting on the balcony of our hotel watching boats come and go, listening to birds, and relaxing.

The streets of Flores are multi-colored and pastel. A llight green restaurant gives way to a peach colored hotel next to a sky blue gift shop. The bridge to Santa Elena means there is some traffic here, but the streets feel more pedestrian.

Our room wasn't ready when we arrived so we found a balcony restaurant to get a little food, grilled meat and handmade tortillas. We watched from above as a parade clopped along the streets on horseback. I understand there is some kind of a festival this was announcing and we may try to find it later. The parade ended with a Guatemalan beauty queen complete with crown. She was not riding on a horse, but on a bull. Ha. I guess we're not in Anaheim anymore.

The water is sloshing up to the street under the balcony where I'm sitting. The faint buzz of boat motor is drifting this way. The sun is setting and my steak taco is wearing out. I think I'm going to go see if Basilio is up for some more Guatemalan food.
