I'm not sure when I decided Belize was a place I needed to see. I'm intrigued by the fact that Belize has the second largest barrier reef in the world. (I hope some day to see the largest one off the coast of Australia.) I'm also excited about the ancient Mayan civilization that once occupied that area of Central America. There are still a lot of ruins including some cave ruins that are of significant repute. Belize was once the British Honduras and is English-speaking...I suppose the only English-speaking country in Central America. I have been intrigued at the pictures of the Cayo region of Belize, especially the cave tubing in the underground rivers. And, from San Ignacio, the largest Maya city ever established, Tikal, is just a short trip across the Guatemalan border.
I convinced my friend, Basilio, that Belize was a trip worth taking last summer, but the trip fell apart. You may not believe this, but I plan a lot more trips than I actually take. :)
But, with a break in semesters and the perfect weather in Belize in January, this seemed like the time to reschedule. So, on Monday, Basilio and I fly through Dallas and Miami to get to Belize City and begin the adventure. Will try to post lots of pictures and stories, so check back as often as you can.
