Working a backwards timeline, I had to be at the ranger tour bus by 7:50, eat breakfast beforehand, checkout before breakfast - therefore, I was up at 5:30 and saw the sunrise, deer outside my balcony and a beautiful wild mountain bluebird on my railing. Lovely rewards for having to get up at such an early hour.

The rooms at the lodge in the park are very old and drafty. I was under the blankets by 9 and listened to the wind howl for quite a long time before finally dozing off. Woke up with a headache probably caused by high elevation and lack of hydration. Downed three glasses of water with breakfast.

The 4 hour tour was fabulous and Susan, our guide, was the best. The scenery at Mesa Verde is spectacular and the ability to be able to hike down to the cliff dwellings is a real treat.

And the end of hour four I was on Indian culture overload. So much information - good information - but hard to remember it all. We saw a pit house, sun temple, many cliff dwellings, and a museum. Each with fascinating histories.

Before leaving the park I made a couple of stops on my own that were not included in the tour. Thank goodness it was only a 30 minute drive to Durango. I'm bushed!
